Induced breeding of Jat Puti, Puntius sophore was conducted to determine the optimum dose of pituitary gland (PG) hormone extracts. The present study consisted of four treatments (TI, T2, T3, and T4) with three replications of each. The ovulation rate, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate were determined. Among the four treatments, T3 (7 mg PG/kg body weight for female and 4 mg PG/kg body weight for male) showed the best result in terms of ovulation rate (95%), fertilization rate (90%), hatching rate (85%) and survival rate (84% respectively). The results of above parameters of T1, T2, T3, and T4 were found to differ significantly (P<0.01) among themselves. The present findings can be used in induced breeding of P. sophore for the development of hatchery propagation.

To investigate the induced breeding success and reproductive behaviors in captive condition by using the carp pituitary hormone extracts, which may explore the culture of jat puti.

The research work was conducted at the hatchery of the Fisheries Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, during 16 May to 10 July 2011. The wild brood fish of P. sophore was collected from the different places of the Mymensingh district. The experiment consisted of four treatments viz., TI, T2, T3, and T4 with three replications of each, to observe the effective dose for induced breeding. The females and males were injected near the pectoral fin base with different doses of carp PG hormone extracts. Thirty six female and seventy two male were selected for dose optimization and to determine ovulation rate, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate. The brood fishes were selected by external morphological characteristics (such as abdomen, vent and pectoral fins) and hand stripping. The brood fishes were carefully handled to avoid injury and secondary infections.Carp PG was collected from local market of Mymensingh Municipal area. The female fishes were injected with PG at the range from 5 to 8 mg per kg body weight. At the same time, the male fishes were injected with PG at the rate of 4 mg per kg body weight. A total of 108 (male:female=2:1) fishes were injected. One female and two male injected fishes were released in each aquarium (2.5mX2mXlm). To study reproductive behavior of P. sophore each and every movement, the activities were observed from the time of injection until ovulation time of the fishes in the aquarium. Spawning took place inside the spawning aquarium usually within 6-8 hrs after administration of hormone injection. The eggs hatched out within 22-24 hrs at temperature ranged from 27 to 300C. For the determination of ovulation rate, the number of ovulated fish was divided by the total number of female fish injected and then multiplied by.100. Meanwhile for determination of fertilization and hatching rates, approximately 100 eggs were placed in bowls of 1.00 L capacity with three replications each having water flow from porous PVC pipe and outlet facility. Following breeding parameters will be recorded:Ovulation rate (%) = No. of fish ovulated / Total no. of female fish injected x 100; Fertilization rate(%) = No. of fertilized eggs / Total no. of eggs (fertilized + unfertilized) x 100; No. of eggs hatched / Total no. of fertilized eggs x 100.The results found in the experiment were subjected to statistical analysis, ANOVA, (one way) that showed the significance (P<0.01) level of differences between the treatments. This statistical analysis was performed with the aid of the computer software MS Excel program and Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to identify significance differences among means with the computer software SPSS program.

The administration of the appropriate dose of hormone is the basic to the success of induced breeding; the condition of the brood fish and the environmental conditions are also equally important. In the present study, the best breeding performances showed in T3 (7 mg PG per kg body weight of fish for female and 4 mg PG per kg body weight of fish for male respectively) in terms of ovulation rate, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate (95%, 90%, 85% and 84% respectively) among the four treatments. The findings helps to explore the much seed production of P. sophore in captive condition which will be enhanced the total fish production and also conservation of fish biodiversity.
