Demonstration of Culture Technologies of High Valued Endangered Fish Species at Selected Upazilas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Polyculture of major carps with pabda and bata, and monoculture of shing (H. fossilis) demonstrated for the period of 6 months in 4 farmer's pond of 600 to 800 m² each. Before stocking, rotenone was used @12.5 kg/ha in all the demonstration ponds to eradicate the all sorts of fish species. After 3 days of poisoning, ponds were treated with lime at the rate of 250 kg/ha. After preparation, ponds have been stocked with fingerlings of shing fingerling and fed with pelted feed (35% crude protein) at the rate of 10% of their standing biomass. After 3 months of rearing, the sampling mean weight of rohu, catla, mrigal, pabda, bata and shing was 180±3.25, 320±5.12, 210±4/92. 18.42±3.29 and 25.21±2.21, 26.11±0.41g, respectively.

Objectives:

To demonstrat of culture technologies of high valued fish species at different farming conditions through DoF; training of progressive fish farmer on various endangered fish species culture practices; and feed-back of field problems to research for solution.

Methodology:

Polyculture of major carps with pabda and bata, and monoculture of shing (H. fossilis) demonstrated for the period of 6 months in 4 farmer's pond at Bokshimul and Modhupur village under Fulpur upazilla, Mymensingh. Prior to stocking, ponds were dried and cleaned for weed and unwanted aquatic animals. The dried ponds were exposed to sunlight for several days and then limed at the rate of 250 kg/ha. Five days after liming, water was supplied from shallow tube and filled up to the depth of 1 meter. Fingerlings of carps (rohu, catla and mrigal), pabda and bata were stocked @ 7,500 and 5,000/ha, respectively. Shing fingerling with an average weight 4.2±0.64g were stocked @75,000/ha. Fish was fed @ 4% of body weight with rice bran, mustard oil cake, wheat bran and fish meal (28% crude protein). Besides feeding, all the ponds were fertilized with organic fertilizer (cowdung) @1,000 kg/ha/15 days interval. Water quality parameters such as water temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen and total alkalinity were analysed at ten days interval between 900 to 1000 hrs.
