Entrepreneurship and Swot Analysis of the Women Entrepreneurs in Aman Seed Business in Bogra and Sirajganj Districts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was taken to examine the characteristics of women entrepreneurs and SOWT analysis of the women-led Aman seed business in 4 selected upazilas under Bogra and Sirajganj districts. Self-confidence, industriousness, well coordinated, flexible and persistent, need for achievement was the most important characteristics of the women entrepreneurs. Most of them (40%) fall in the potential age group to be entrepreneur. Seed business was their main occupation. About 40% women had primary level and 5% had SSC level of education. The perceptions of the entrepreneurship's characteristics were satisfactory in low educated women comparative to the higher one. The seed business had strengths that can overcome the weaknesses and had many opportunities to avoid threats. Moreover, a friendly policy, logistical support and commitment should be ensured by both government and non- government organization so that these rural women entrepreneurs can run their business efficiently.

Objectives:

2. To analyze the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) of women-led seed business.

Methodology:

Three women groups out of 10 under 4 upazilas of project site located at Bogra and Sirajganj districts and 6 market intermediaries were selected randomly depending on their involvement in Aman seed production and marketing activities. Each group constituted 20 women and total sample size was 66 (60 women + 6 market intermediaries). Data were collected from each of the three selected groups through survey schedule during the month of February and March 2008 as per procedures. Tabular technique was mainly used to analyze the data and derived meaningful findings by using simple statistical measures like sum, percentage, average and ratios. Entrepreneur is a person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk or his/her own venture. A successful entrepreneur must need to acquire some important characteristics. Under the four-parameter nineteen characteristics were chosen for the study. Whether the entrepreneurs possess the characteristics or not, was one of the objectives of the study. The selected characteristics are- Need for achievement, risk taking capacity, creativity and innovation, industriousness, self-confidence, need for power, internal locus of control, external locus of control, need for autonomy, leadership capability, decision making capability, well coordinated, flexible and persistent, Social relationship and religious value, Opportunity seeking and information on market issues, Age at entrepreneurial entry, occupation and education level, lndex of total sample Index of attributes was calculated to find out the most important characteristics of women entrepreneurs engaged in Aman seed business. A four-test category in a score of 0-3 was selected by assigning score 3, 2, 1 and 0 to the category of high, medium, low and no. After consulting with the women entrepreneur about their business activities, the researcher assigned score against each characteristic depending on her gross judgment. Simple rules for successful SWOT analysis. A researcher must be realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of the organization when conducting SWOT analysis. SWOT analysis should distinguish between where the organization is today, and where it could be in the future. SWOT should always be specific, Grey areas must be avoided. SWOT should be applicable always in relation to the competition. SWOT must be kept short and simple. Complexity and over analysis should be avoided. SWOT is subjective.

Achievement/Findings:

Women in Aman seed business possessed necessary characteristics of entrepreneurs which is essential to run a seed business. Most of them (40%) fall in the age group of 26 to 35 years, the potential age group to be entrepreneur. The perceptions of the entrepreneurship's characteristics were satisfactory in low educated women comparative to the higher one. It can be expected that the strengths and opportunities of women-led seed business can outweigh the weaknesses of the business as well as threats. To make this seed business viable collaboration of GO, NGOs and private organizations is necessary to ensure logistical support at the right time. Strengthening contract farming through co-operative system is crucial for better survival of women-led seed business. Above all, there must be long-term policy and commitment of the government to make the market stable and improve the performance of seed industry through proper utilization of market participants.
