Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bulk of the studied hilsa of different size classes few under the maturity stage-I to IV (82%), only 14% and 4% recorded under stage-V and stage-VI respectively. Oozing hilsa of 33% found in the samples during October, these samples were collected from the Alexander, Ramgoti and Hatia regions. Fecundity ranged between 1.12 and 9.5 lakh. A very few number of spent hilsa was found in the landing samples, which deserves rigorous study, the fate of most hilsa after spawning. Abundance of jatka was found poor in the Meghna river system that ranged between 5-28 numbers per haul, contributing tremendously low performance than that of previous year. Water quality of the jatka assessed area was found congenial. Jatka protection measures were appreciated by the hilsa fishers. According to fishers' opinion, hilsa production increased 15-20% maximum size group ranged between 25-35 cm. Catch of big sized hilsa is also increased. Fishers, arathders, paikers and consumers were interviewed in Bhairab, Aricha, Patharghata, Khulna, Godagari, Barisal, Parerhat, Barguna, Baghabari, Patuakhali, Amtoli, Mohipur, Dhulia and Chandpur about the proposed 30 cm hilsa banning program. The respondents made different comments on this aspect both positive and negative.

Objectives:

A) To study the maturity of hilsa at different size groups; to investigate the recent spawning status of hilsa; and to study the impact of jatka fishing ban on the abundance and distribution of jatka and hilsa.

B)To assess the socio-economic changes of fishers related to harvest hilsa (up to 30 cm); to assess the impact of juvenile hilsa protection on the abundance and production of hilsa; to assess the impact of juvenile hilsa protection on different marketing channels (whole sellers, retailers, consumers etc.), exporters and other related entrepreneurs; and to determine the catch per unit effort (CPUE) and landing status of grown up hilsa.

Methodology:

Hilsa samples collection was done from commercial landing centres and experimental fishing as well. The collected samples were sorted out into three age groups viz. juveniles (10-20 cm), pre-adults (20-30 cm) and adult fishes (above 30 cm). The sex, maturity stage and gonadal weight was recorded through dissecting samples. For fecundity study, at least three small portions of gonad (front, middle and back) was considered under study. Classification of maturity stage, values of gonado-somatic index (GSI) and egg diameter were determined. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and focus group discussion was conducted in the selected fishing villages. Survey data sheet was used to collect information about socio-economic condition of jatka/tempu fishers from the selected sites.

Achievement/Findings:

Comprehensive knowledge on the size and age of hilsa maturity and quantification of hilsa fecundity; the major spawning and nursery grounds of hilsa will be identified and delineated; provide information for hilsa sanctuary operation policy guidelines and management; the socio-economic condition of hilsa fiishers particularly those who are engaged in catching jatka and tempu hilsa will be well understood; comprehensive knowledge will be gained about the impact of tempu protection on total hilsa production; and information regarding the impact of juvenile hilsa protection on different marketing channels will be generated that will help on providing information for establishment of hilsa sanctuary, policy guidelines and managment.
