Impact of Daudkandi Floodplain Aqua-culture on Production, Biodiversity and Fish Resource Conservation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The culture practice of Daudkandi floodplain is not uniform. Stocking density varied between 4,000 and 4,500/acre. Major culture species are Rui, Catla, Mrigal, Calbasu, Big head, Rajpunti, Common carp, Silver carp, Tilapia, Piranha, and Pangas. Percentage composition of reared species varied farm to farm. General species composition are: Tilapia- 30%, Mrigal-15%, Siler carp-15%, Rui-10%, Big head-10%, Common carp- 5%, Piranha- 5% and others (bata/Catla/Calbasu/Rajpunti/Pangas/Chital)- 10% and the survival rate was found to ranged between 85-90%. About 20-25 wild species usually enter in to the culture area. Fish production ranged between 0.6-1.5 tons/acre/5-6 months crop. Floodplain fish culture practice increased water management facility. Education level and employment opportunity increased about 60% and 20% respectively. The culture system ensured flood protection; better communication facilities in 40% aquaculture areas, increased agriculture production by 10-15% and reduction of cost about 22%. Overall socio-economic condition of the stakeholders has improved.

Objectives:

To find out the changes in production and biodiversity of fish in the proposed area due to community based aquaculture development with its impact on aquatic fauna, their migration, breeding and economic benefits on the landless and marginal farmers.

Methodology:

Other than the historic information, a portion of the community people were directly interviewed about previous and present availability of fish species, on their spawning and migration activity in the floodplain ecosystem through a standard questionnaire. Information on fish diversity of non-intervened floodplain areas were also collected through interviewing. Information on present fish diversity (other than cultured species) in the selected ecosystem was collected in the day of last fishing after complete drying. Data on the aspects like culture composition, stocking, feeding and water management, production, total investment with source of fund and total sale return and benefit were collected from the project office and in some cases by personal interviewing.

Results and empirical data and information on genetic resources, production and management system from this study will be helpful to formulate and floodplain aquaculture technology which can ultimately be a model applicable in other underutilized floodplain fisheries to to boost up the fish production of the country through a sustainable community based approach.
