Cage Culture of Monosex Tilapia in the River Dakatia, Chandpur and Kaptai Lake, Rangamati

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was undertaken in Dakatia river, Chandpur. The stocking densities were 100/m²monosex tilapia in three different treatments. The average weight of fingerlings was 30.6g when stocked in net cage. After two months, the average weight of mono-sex tilapia was found 90, 110 and 114g in treatment-I, treatment-II and treatment-III, respectively. The growth performance was found satisfactory in all the treatments. Another experiment was conducted in Kaptai lake, Rangamati. The stocking densities were 100/m², 150/m²and 200/m²mono-sex tilapia in three different treatments. The average weight of fingerlings was 30.6g when stocked in net cage. After two months, the average weight of mono-sex tilapia was found 192, 127 and 111g in treatment-I, treatment-II and treatment-III, respectively. The growth performance was found good in all the treatments.

Objectives:

To determine the effectiveness of commercial semi-buoyant feed in cage culture; to refine cage culture technology; and to demonstrate cage culture technology.

Methodology:

The frame of cages was made by bamboo and nylon ropes. Empty vacuum PVC or iron dram of 250 liters size was used as cage float. Floating net cages, having an area of 3x3x2m made of knot-less polyethylene net (mesh size 1.1 cm) for Dakatia river, Chandpur and Kaptai lake, Rangamati were installed. Net cages was hanged with bamboo rafts. Each cage was covered at the top with another piece of net to prevent escape of fish by jumping and bird predation. The whole structure was fixed with bamboo poles at each corner of the structure by making loop with nylon rope to facilitate easy floating of cages depending on water level. Commercial semi-buoyant feed was tested on growth and production of mono-sex tilapia. Stocking density was 100/m² in all the treatments with 30-40 g size fingerlings. Feeding was be done with pelleted semi-buoyant feed @ 4, 5 and 6% of body weight once, daily in the treatments-I, II & III respectively. The duration of the experiment was 120 days. Experiment was conductd with stocking densities of 100, 150 and 200/m² in three different treatments with 30-40 g size fingerlings.
