Diversity analysis was carried out among 222 accessions of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.). Qualitative variations were found in seedling stem pigmentation, leaf pubescence, leaflet size, tendril length, flower ground colour, pod pigmentation, ground colour of testa, pattern of testa, colour pattern on testa and cotyledon colour. A good variation were exhibited in days to 1st flowering, number of pods per peduncle, pods per plant, seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and yield per plant (10.41 to 36.42%). Mahalanobis generalized distance (D2) analysis was used to group the lentil accessions. A total of 83.91 % variation was observed from principal component analysis against first five eigen values while only first two values were responsible for 51.39 % variation. The accessions were grouped into ten clusters based on generalized distance values. The highest inter-cluster distance was obtained between the clusters VIII and X (32.344) followed by IX and X (26.827), while the lowest was between clusters I and VII (1.994). Maximum number of accessions (34) was included in cluster IV and minimum 6 accessions included in cluster VIII. The maximum value of inter-cluster distance indicated that accessions belonging to cluster VIII were far diverged from those of cluster X.

  1. to study the genetic diversity, (ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and (iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

The experiment was conducted at Regional Plant Genetic Resources Centre, RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna during the winter 2010-11. The experiment was laid out in a non-replicated design. Unit plot size was 4m x 1m and seeds were sown in rows with spacing 40 cm. The seeds were sown on 30 October, 2010. The experiment was done with 222 lentil accessions including ‘BARI Masur 4’ and ‘BARI Masur-6’ as check varieties. Fungicide, insecticide and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from middle rows of each accession. Data were recorded on plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, 100 seed weight and yield from each plant. Grain yield was recorded from per plant after harvest. Data were analyzed and diversity ananlysis were peformed by Genstat software.

Qualitative character variations were found in seedling stem pigmentation, leaf pubescence, leaflet size, tendril length, flower ground colour, pod pigmentation, pod dehiscence, ground colour of testa, pattern of testa, colour pattern on testa, cotyledon colour, lodging susceptibility, pest  and disease susceptibility among the 222 accessions of lentil. Quantitative character variations were exhibited in days to 1st flowering, 50% flowering and maturity, plant height, number of pods per peduncle, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed wt and yield per plant. In PCA the first five components were found to contribute for 83.91 % of the total variation while only first two components values contributed for 51.39 % variation. The accessions were grouped into ten clusters using D2 values. Maximum accessions (34) were included in cluster IV and minimum (6) in cluster VIII. Average inter-cluster distance among the ten clusters are calculated. The highest inter-cluster distance was obtained between the clusters VIII and X (32.344) followed by IX and X (26.827), while the lowest was between I and VII (1.994). The maximum value of inter-cluster distance indicated that accessions belonging to cluster VIII were far diverged from those of cluster X. Similarly, the higher inter-cluster values between cluster IX and X indicated that the accessions between each pair of clusters were more diverged. Clusters I, VII and X were observed for maximum seeds per pod, similarly cluster X for plant height, cluster IV for pods per plant, cluster VIII for 100-seed weight and early maturity, and cluster II for early flowering. Number of pods per peduncle, pods per plant, seeds per pod, seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and yield per plant had the highest contribution towards divergence. The accessions BD-3894, BD-3995, BD-3902, BD-3869 and BD-3804 were identified as better performance among 222 lentil accessions.
