Polyculture of Mud Crab, Scylla Serrata with Shrimp and Other Brackishwater Finfishes.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The mean survival of shrimp varied significantly (p<0.05) with a higher mean value of 74.63±7.27% in T₁ followed by 52.13±2.42% in T₃ and 42.18±7.15% in T₂. The production of shrimp of 424.09±3.49 kg/ha was significantly (p<0.05) highest in T₁ than T₂ (302.48±3.38 kg/ha) and T₃ 323.27±9.68 kg/ha). Higher final weight of 151.09±5.46 g crabs attained in T₃ than T₂ (137.80±7.96 kg/ha) but the difference was not significant (p>0.05) between treatments. The mean survival of mud crab varied significantly (p<0.05) with a higher mean value of 51.04±2.20% in T₃ followed by 41.14±1.98% in T₂. The production of mud crab of 568.80 kg/ha was significantly (p<0.05) higher in T₂ than T₃ where the production was only 385.37 kg/ha.

Objectives:

To evaluate potential and technique of culturing shrimp with crab and other fishes. The specific objectives for the FY 2006-07 are as below:

To determine the feasibility of the polyculture system of mud crab with shrimp; to assess the growth, survival and production performance of mud crab S. serrata and shrimp (P. monodon); and to assess the interspecies interaction between mud crab and shrimp.

Methodology:

In polyculture of mud crab, S. serrata and shrimp (P. monodon), nine (0.1 ha each) brackishwater ponds were sun dried and treated with lime. The ponds were filled up with tidal water of the Shibsa river and fertilizers (organic & inorganic) were applied. The inside of pond embankment was encircled with bamboo splits made fence covered with nylon net, one meter apart from the edge of water. After 3-4 days of applying inorganic fertilizers, shrimp PL were stocked in the nursery enclosure of the ponds. After 15 days nursing, shrimp (3.36±0.23 cm and weight 0.26±0/04 g) was released in the ponds and at the same day mud crab (CL: 2.61±0.22 cm; CW: 4.63±0.11cm and BW: 43±2.64 g) was stocked in the ponds according to the experimental design. Crab and shrimp were fed with tilapia @ 10-5% of crab biomass an Saudi-Bangla shrimp feed 5-3% of shrimp biomass twice daily. About 50% of water was exchanged with tidal water at every new and full moon throughout the experimental period. Growth performance of crabs and shrimps and physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, transparency, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen of water of the ponds were recorded fortnightly.

Mud crab, Scylla serrata is one of the important commodities, which help the country for earning the foreign curency.This experiment will help coastal farmers to adopt appropriate polyculture technique in brackishwater ponds/ ghers. As a result, polyculture technique of mud crab to be improved through this program will help the people in coastal region to their poverty alleviation.
