Biology, Breeding and Seed Production of Estuarine Finfish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three doses of PG (5, 7, and 10 mg/kg) and three doses of Ovaprim (1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 ml/kg) have been tested in two separate breeding trials. Both females of average body weight of 165-250 mg and males of 110-145 gm were injected in a single dose and released in breeding hapas at 1:2 ratios. Ovaprim resulted 83-87% hatching rates, while PG resulted only 40% hatching rates. From 42 days results it was observed that the length and weight of larvae under treatment-I (250 fry/m²) were higher compared to those of treatment-II and Treatment-III. It was observed that GSI value of both sexes increased from December to February. The highest GSI value was found in February 1.48±0.45 and 14.71±4.40 in male and female respectively. Fecundity was highest (1,41,790±42,455) in February.

Objectives:

To optimize the protein level for brood management of M. gulio; determine hormones and its doses for induced breeding of M. gulio; optimize stocking density of M. gulio fry in nursery; mass seed production of M. gulio; and investigating length-weight relationship, maturity and fecundity of Liza persia.

Methodology:

Different dosages of two types of hormones were selected for using in induced breeding of M. gulio in captivity. While female were given different doses, males were given PG of 5 mg/kg and "Ovaprim" of 1 ml/kg. Sex ratio was maintained at 2:1 (Male: Female). The injected fishes were kept in the glass nylon hapas pre-set in the cement cisterns filled with the saline water (10-12 ppt). After releasing of eggs the brood fishes were removed from the hapas and artificial shower of water was maintained. An experiment was conducted in earthen ponds of 100 m² each with three stocking densities. Ponds were prepared by using organic manure (cow-dung @ 5 t/ha). Fry (5 day old hatchlings) having initial length of 4.53±0.83 mm and weight of 3.33 mg were stocked after 4/5 days of cow-dung application. Fish fry were fed with a mixture of fine rice bran (50%), mustard oil cake (25%) and fish meal (25%) @ 10-12% of estimated body weight. To identify GSI value, fecundity, maturity and spawning cycle of L. parsia, fishes of different size groups were collected from natural sources and local fish market. Data on different parameters of male and female have been recorded and analyzed. GSI was estimated as the ratio of the wet gonad weight to somatic weight expressed in percentage, following the formula: GSI=(Weight of gonad/Weight of fish)x100.

Achievement/Findings:

The research findings will build-up knowledge on various aspects of brood stock management, induced breeding technique and larvae rearing technique of M. gulio and Liza persia which are important brackish water finfish in our country. The generated knowledge will help to develop mass seed production technique of these two species in captivity. Once the seed production in controlled conditions will be known, that will pave the way of grow-out culture operations in coastal region of Bangladesh.
