Economics of Pond Fish Production in Some Selected Areas of Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Carp polyculture under semi-intensive system was carried out in 5 upazilas under Mymensingh district during the period from March to December, 2007 to determine the profitability and resource use efficiency of pond fish production. A total of 50 fish farmers, 10 from each upazila were randomly selected for collection of data through a well structured questionnaire. A questionnaire was developed, pre-tested and finally revised to accommodate relevant information in line with the objectives of the study. Cobb- Douglas production function model was employed to find out the contribution of seven explanatory variables to the total return. Out of these seven variables; pond size, fertilizers and manure, fish feed, fingerlings had positive contribution to the total return, while fish toxicant and lime, fish harvesting cost, pond lease value and bank interest had negative sign implying decreasing return in pond fish culture. Fish production in the study area ranged from 2850 to 3600 kg/ha/yr with an average of 3221 kg/ha/yr. A verage total cost, gross return per hectare per year of fish production were Tk 149869 and Tk 275185, respectively the benefit cost ratio was 1.84. Fish farming under semi- intensive system of management was found to be a highly profitable enterprise.

Objectives:

1. To determine the relative costs and returns of carp production under polyculture system and management;

2. To identify the factors responsible for variations in yield and economic return of carp polyculture; and

3. To identify the problems and constraints associated with carp farming.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted in 5 upazilas such as, Trishal, Muktagacha, Gouripur, Fulpur and Ishwarghonj under Mymensingh district during the period from March to December, 2007. These upazilas were selected because of heavy concentration of fish ponds and rapid expansion or aquaculture industries there. Name and address of the fish farmers were collected from MAEP archive and Mymensingh District Fisheries Office. A total of 50 fish farmers were randomly selected from each upazilas. Conventional survey technique was employed to collect data from the field. Initially a questionnaire was developed, pre-tested and finally revised to accommodate the relevant in formation in line wi th the objecti ves of the study. The data were collected by directly interviewing the respective farmers and checking their pond book records. The information provided by the farmers was also cross-checked by discussing with the Upazila Fisheries Officers. The collected data were complied, tabulated and analyzed by using of statistical package SPSS. The effect of various inputs on pond fish production was estimated through the Cobb-Douglas production function analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the present study indicated that fish production in the study areas was highly profitable business. Cobb-Douglas production function analysis indicated that inputs such as, fingerlings, manure and fertilizer, and feed had positive impact on gross return and were highly significant. Return to scale (?bi) derived from summation of the production co-efficient of explanatory variable was 1.48. The co-efficient of determination (R₂) was 0.860 which, implies that the included variable represented 86 percent variation of gross return. A very much closer value of ?bi as well as R2 was noted by various authors for polyculture of carps. All these observations lead to the conclusion that fish culture under both mono and polyculture system is highly profitable venture.
