Performance Evaluation of Modern Boro Rice Genotypes Under Different Establishment Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The interaction of Boro genotypes and establishment methods did not influence grain yields. Wet seeding (WS) gave higher grain yield (5.4 t/ha) compared to dry seeding and transplanting (TP) methods. Advanced line BR4828 showed better performance compared to BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28.

Objectives:

To evaluate and identify suitable varieties for different establishment methods of Boro rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the west byde, BRRI experimental farm during Boro 2003-04 in split plot design with three replications. Three establishment methods dry seeding (DS), wet seeding (WS) and transplanting (TP) were assigned in the main plots and three genotypes BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and one advanced breeding line, BR4828 were in the sub plots. Other management practices followed for this experiment are as per recommendation.

Achievement/Findings:

Interaction between establishment method and rice genotypes was not significant for grain yield and yield components. Irrespective of rice genotypes, grain yield of WS (5.84 t/ha) was higher than that of other establishment methods. The higher grain yield was associated with higher number of panicles per m². DS method produced second highest grain yield. Grain yields of TP (5.07 t/ha) and DS (5.33 t/ha) were comparable. Among the genotypes, BR4828 (5.77 t/ha) and BRRI dhan29 gave comparable grain yields significantly higher than that of BRRI dhan28 (4.43t/ha) irrespective of different establishment methods. On an average, DS rice gave higher number of grains per panicle followed by TP and WS.
