Effectiveness of Commercial Probiotics as a Biotechnological Tool for Shrimp (penaeus Monodon) Health Management.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

After 120 day culture the final mean weight of shrimp was highest of 20.56g in treatment-I (6 PL/m²) and lowest of 17.7g in treatment-III (10 PL/m²) though the variation in length were minimum between treatments. In all treatments, the quantitative load of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) increased and simultaneously the quantity of Vibrio sp. decreased. As a result, the ratio of THB of Vibrio sp. increased sharply, both in the pond water and sediment, after application of probiotics. But, the quantitative profile of similar bacteria in the control ponds remained the trend of increase that observed in the treatment ponds before application of probiotics. No remarkable variations marked among treatments throughout culture period. Water quality and productivity stayed very good round the experimental period.

Objectives:

1. To determine the effect of probiotics on bacterial population in culture pond ecosystem;

2. To study the soil and water quality parameters of the culture ponds; and

3. To study the biological parameters such as average body weight, health status of shrimp and total harvest achievement between experimental and control ponds.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in nine ponds of 0.1 ha each in the pond complex of Brackishwater Station. Ponds were prepared following drying, liming @ 250 kg/ha) and then fertilization with urea and TSP @ 30 kg/ha and 25 kg/ha, respectively. After stocking of PL, water of the ponds was treated with lime (dolomite) and fertilized with urea and TSP as necessary. Selected probiotics (Super PS^TM) was applied at a uniform dose of 1.0 ppm, as recommended by the manufacturer, in all treatments. The total amount of probiotics was applied in two equal instalments- once during pond preparation and the rest at the mid of culture period. The population of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB), beneficial bacteria (Baccilus sp.) and pathogenic bacteria (Vibrio sp.) of water and surface sediment of the ponds were monitored bi-weekly by plate count method.

Achievement/Findings:

Liquifies organic sub-stractes in pond bottom solid environment; out-competes and help prevent the growth of undersirable pathogenic bacteria to proliferate; speeds up the natural process of waste degradation; eliminates ammonia, nitrite, hydrogen sulfide accumulated in pond soils environment; creates natural invertebrate (i.e. bloodworm) and increasing oxygen transfer into soil; increase higher survival rate and grow rate when stocking post-larvae (PL); works in fresh and salt water; safe and beneficial for shrimp and phytoplankton; and no residue and environmental friendly component for broader activity spectrum.
