Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment of 120 days was conducted to assess the impact of peripheral canal on the growth and survival of P. monodon. The average growth of P. monodon was 16.21g, 17.04g &17.85g while the survival was obtained as 42.30%, 43.85% and 40.63% in the treatment T₁ (canal depth 0.9 m), T₂ (canal depth 0.7 m), T₃ (Control) respectively. The differences in the growth, survival and production of shrimp in the experiment were found insignificant. However, highest production of 150.17 kg/ha of shrimp was achieved in T₂.

Objectives:

To compare production and economics of P. monodon using locally prepared feed with those of commercial pelleted feed.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted to assess the impact of peripheral canal on the growth and survival of P. monodon. Two ghers nearby the Brackishwater Station were selected in two areas (Bandikathi and Shibbatimouza) in the Paikgacha. Each of the gher was divided into three plots of 0.1 ha (40.0m x 25.0 m) each. The ghers were drained out and then sun dried. The earthen canal in each plot (116.0m) was dug according to the design of experiment. The lime was applied @ 250 kg/ha. Ghers were filled with brackishwater and then fertilized with DAP and urea (2:1) @ 35 kg/ha. The hatchery produced PCR tested shrimp P. monodon post-larvae were stocked in the ghers. The shrimp were fed with locally prepared feed (approx. 35% protein content, consisting of a mixture of fishmeal 29%, MOC15%c rice bran 30%, soybean meal 16%, wheat flour 9% and vitamin premix 0.1%) at 3% body weight. Weekly monitoring of water quality parameters and bi-week monitoring of the growth of shrimp were done.
