Maximizing Agro-economic Productivity of Three-crop System by Practicing Double Transplanting for Boro Rice During During 2003-04

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under irrigated condition, double transplanting (DT) of boro rice in a T. Aman-Potato-Boro cropping pattern might be an alternative option either to reduce the yield loss of late planted boro rice or to keep it at a minimum level. T. Aman-Potato-Boro (Double transplanted) cropping pattern gave 86% and 188% higher rice equivalent yield (REY) than the traditional practices at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia, respectively. The gross margin of T. Aman-Potato-Boro (Double transplanted) pattern was 89% and 264% higher than the traditional and 31 and 17% higher than T. Aman-Potato-Boro pattern at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia, respectively. Economic analysis showed that the gross margin was the highest in T. Aman-Potato-Boro (Double transplanted) cropping pattern which could be recommended for medium high lands of Bangladesh and other Asian rice growing countries.

Objectives:

To bring diversification and to increase cropping intensity with the inclusion of potato in the wet-dry transition period and to evaluate the influence of double transplanting for Boro rice on the total productivity of T. Aman-Potato-Boro cropping pattern.

Methodology:

The study was conducted simultaneously at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur and FSR&D Site, Kapasia under Gazipur. The tested cropping patterns were T. Aman-Boro-Fallow (existing), T. Aman-Potato-Boro and T. Aman-Potato-Boro(double transplanting). The crop variety were BR6110 for T. Aman, diamont for potato and BRRI dhan29 for boro rice, respectively. Boro was transplanted at last week of December with 40-45 day old seedlings for existing practice. Potato was seeding by 15 November for the pattern two and three. After potato harvesting boro was transplanted with 70 days old seedlings for pattern two. For double transplanting of boro rice, first transplanting of 40-45 days old seedlings in a small area with 12-15 seedlings per hill maintaining 10 x 10 cm spacing and 1200 sq. m area needed to transplant for covering 10000 sq. m under second transplanting. Second transplanting in the main field with 5-6 splitting tillers per hill maintaining 20 x 15 cm spacing after potato harvesting at 90 days of potato planting. Recommended doses of fertilizers ( N-P-K-S-Zn were applied at 80-20-35-11-1.8 kg/ha as urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, respectively for T. Aman, 114-30-125-22-4 kg/ha for potato and 120-26-60-12-4 kg/ha for boro) were maintained. In case of DT boro rice, for 1st transplanting, P, K, S and Zn were 26-60-12-4 kg/ha and 47 kg/ha was topdressed at 15-20 days after transplanting. For 2nd transplanting, P, K, S and Zn were 26-60-12-4 kg/ha and 94 kg/ha was applied with two equal splits as basal and top dressed at 15-20 DAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed the agronomic productivity of the crops and cropping patterns. At BRRI, Gazipur, T. Aman yield ranged from 5.88 to 6.04 t/ha. Potato yielded 10.25 t/ha when harvested after 70 days of planting and 13.88 t/ha when harvested at full maturity. Potato yield was low because of poor stand establishment caused by poor sub-surface drainage after irrigation. At Kapasia, T. Aman yield ranged from 5.79 to 5.94 t/ha. Potato yielded 23.00 t/ha when harvested after 70 days of plating and 27.83 t/ha when harvested at full maturity. In Gazipur site, highest rice equivalent yield (REY) of about 27.61 t/ha was obtained from pattern T. Aman-Potato-Boro (Double transplanted) followed by T. Aman-Potato-Boro and T. Aman-Fallow-Boro pattern, which gave average REY of 23.23 and 14.78 t/ha, respectively. Similar results were also obtained in Kapasia with the highest REY of 42.73 t/ha. Economic analysis showed that pattern T. Aman-Potato-Double transplanted Boro rice gave 89% and 264% higher gross margin than the traditional pattern T. Aman-Fallow-Boro at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia and 31% and 17% higher gross margin than the pattern T. Aman-Potato-Single transplanted Boro rice, respectively.
