The study investigates the effect of roving twist. The properties of yarns produced from 30% jute and 70% cotton blended roving with varying twist are evaluated. The study was carried out in jute and Textile product development Centre (JTPDC) of BJRI in 2006. The study carried out into the effect of roving twist shows higher tensile properties of yarn with increasing of roving twist. The results indicate that the performance and quality of the yarn produced are beyond uster statistics curve. Experimentation performed on the effect of roving twist is described and a computer analysis of the results obtained is carried out in order to fit a statistical curve of different yarn properties. The results demonstrate the critical role played by the roving twist on the ring spun jute-cotton blended yarn properties.

The study the effect of roving twist on jute-cotton blended ring yarn.

BWB jute fibre and American Arizona cotton were used as raw materials. American Arizona cotton was collected from Padma Textile Mills Ltd, Savar, Dhaka. Raw jute was cut into 44 mm by a cutting machine. Chemical Modification: Cutted jute fibres were first treated with 10% NaOH solution at room temperature for 10 minutes. The fibres were hydro-extracted to recover NaOH solution. They were then washed several times with water, neutralized with dilute H2SO4 and finally rinsed. The fibres were then bleached with 10% H2O2 (50%) (100 vol.) at a temperature of 90° C for 2 hrs and at PH of 10-10.50 They then washed and dried.   To open the fibre to break net structure following machines were used for opening & cleaning of the jute fibres (i) Opener, (ii) Shirley Analyzer.  For improvement of functional properties, process performance and to reducing mixing cost and get fancy effect it is necessary to blend jute with cotton. After opening and cleaning, jute and cotton were blended manually in the ration of cotton: jute =70:30. The blended materials were then fed in a miniature-carding machine for the preparation of lap. The lap was then fed in a drawing machine for the preparation of sliver. This was miniature draw frame have a 4 over 4 drafting system, hi the drawing frame drafting and operations are applied on the sliver. This sliver was fed in the speed frame to produce roving. Slightly twisted roving is produced in the speed frame. This roving is allowed to pass through the drafting rollers in produced in the speed frame. This roving is allowed to pass through the drafting rollers in the ring frame. Finally drafting, twisting and winding in the frame, produces yarns.

The results revealed that the behavior of the C.V% of yam count in respect of rove twist that were produced. The results revealed that C.V% of yarn count first decreases with the increase of rove twist, at 1.53 rove twist it was lower but at 1.64 rove twist C.V% rises rapidly.  It was also seen that CSP increased with increasing the roving twist. At rove twist 1.21 the CSP values are lower and at 1.64 rove twist the CSP values were higher than other values. It was also seen that irregularity varied from 22.54 to 24.73 with 1.64 TPI roving the yarn showed a very high value of irregularity (U%). Furthermore, there was no trend or similarity of variation of yarn imperfection with the increase of yarn twist. It was observed that only the yam spun from 1.31 TPI roving the values of neps, Thick place were slightly reduced except for neps at 1.64 TPI roving. Generally roving twist affects the yam properties. Insufficient roving twist causes the excessive end breakage in ring frame and makes proper yam quality where as excessive twist in roving also deteriorates the yarn quality. So there must be an optimum roving twist that produces a satisfactory yarn.
