Evaluation of Different Varieties of Rice and Wheat for New Crop Establishment Techniques.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh, over 85% of wheat is grown in sequence with transplanted Aman (T. Aman). Thus, T. Aman rice followed by wheat is the dominant cropping systems in Bangladesh and serves as the principal source of calorie and protein intake for the teeming millions of the country. Stagnation or in some cases declined productivity of the system has been emerged as crucial points. To satisfy, the ever-increasing demand of food grains for the increased population, productivity of the rice-wheat system is needed to improve at sustainable manner. Several factors have been identified for the declining yields and many attempts have been made on tillage, crop establishment and resource management for improving the productivity of the rice-wheat systems. The study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of newly released varieties/ observed lines of Aman rice and wheat crops under raised bed and flat (conservational planting) and identify varieties with higher agro-economic productivity of two crops. As a result, irrespective of varieties/lines, grain yield was 20% higher compared to raised bed. This yield difference was mainly attributed to higher weed infestation in unpuddled zero-tilled planting under raised bed. Under both planting, BRRI dhan32 gave lower yields resulted due to lodging at grain filling stage. BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan33 were ranked 1 and 2 by farmers, respectively because of that shorter growth duration which enabled farmers to accommodate Rabi crops early or on time.

Objectives:

To identify crops/ varieties with higher agro-economic productivity for new crop establishment technique

Methodology:

The study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of newly released varieties/ observed lines of Aman rice and wheat crops under raised bed and flat (conservational planting) and identify varieties with higher agro-economic productivity of two crops. Activated for the study have been initiated during 2002 Aman season. Five wheat varieties, Shatabdi, Gourab, Protiva, Shourab, and Kanchan (check) and 6 Aman varieties, BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33 and the advanced line BR6110-10-1-2 were grown under two crop establishment techniques in 5 farmers’ plots. Farmers’ participatory evaluation approach was followed and at harvesting preference ranking was performed. Except fertilizer, all other management was performed by farmers. Lastly, two farmers’ plots of Aman rice were managed and results presented without statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that under flat, irrespective of varieties/lines, grain yield was 20% higher compared to raised bed. Under both planting, BRRI dhan32 gave lower yields resulted due to lodging at grain filling stage. BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan33 were ranked 1 and 2 by farmers, respectively because of that shorter growth duration which enabled farmers to accommodate Rabi crops early or on time. For timely establishment wheat and to improve wheat yield with late planting under T. Aman-wheat system with existing varieties of both crops, suitable varieties has been the key issue.
