Evaluation of N-levels and Picking of Fresh Fruits on Quality and Productivity of Okra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh about 70% of the total production of vegetable is produced in winter months because of its suitable environmental condition. On the other hand, vegetable supply is limited in summer months due to of its low production. This could be minimized by growing quick growing short duration vegetables like Okra. Observation in the study area showed that the performance of traditionally grown Okra is not up to the mark. This might be due to use of inadequate N fertilizer and in appropriate time of picking of fresh fruits. Optimum N rate and timely harvesting of fresh fruits may play an important role in producing more high quality fruits of okra. Keeping this view in mind, the study was undertaken to determine an optimum N-rate and suitable time for picking fresh fruits in order to produce higher and better quality of okra. In case of yield and fruits per plant, picking at one day interval gave significantly higher yield and fruits per plant followed by picking at two days interval. Among different N-rates, 70 N gave significantly higher yield and number of fruits per plant followed by the 60 N per ha. The combination of 60 N rate + picking at one days interval gave significantly higher number of seeds per fruit which was statistically identical with that of picking at one day interval + 70 N rate, picking at two days interval + 60 N rate and picking at two days interval + 70 N-rate, picking at one days interval + 80 N rate and picking at two days interval + 80 N rate. From the results it is seen that for the variable picking, picking at one day interval gave better performance irrespective of different N rates. On the other hand, for the variable N- rates, 70 N rate gave better performance irrespective of different picking levels.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of N-levels and picking of fresh fruits on seed quality.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken to determine an optimum N-rate and suitable time for picking fresh fruits in order to produce higher and better quality of okra at the FSR&D site, Kapasia under Gazipur district during Kharif-1, 2003. Four nitrogen rate: 0 (N₁), 60 (N₂), 70 (N₃) and 80 (N₄) kg/ha; and five picking level: picking at one day interval (P₁), picking at two days interval (P₂), picking at three days interval (P₃), picking at four days interval (P₄) and picking at five days interval (P₅). The experimental design was factorial RCB with three replications. Recommended management practices followed for this experiment.

Results indicated that the interaction between nitrogen rate and picking level was not significant for yield, fruits per plant and 100-seed weight. But picking level affects yield, fruits per plant and 100 seed weight irrespective of different N-rates. Similarly N rates affect yield, fruits per plant and 100 seed weight irrespective of picking level .
