Comparative Study on the Electrical Conductivity of Raw, Mercerized and Bleached Jute Fibers.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The values of electrical conductivity of raw, mercerized and bleached jute fibers have been measured over the frequency range of 50 Hz to 1MHz. For raw, mercerized and bleached jute fibers the values of conductivity vary from 1.18 x 10^-8Siemens/m to 1.16 x 10^-5 Siemens/m, 1.03 x10^-8Siemens/m to 1.02 x 10^-5 Siemens/m and 8.83 x 10^-09Siemens/m to 8.86 x 10^-6 Siemens/m respectively. The values of conductivity for mercerized jute samples are found to be lower than that of raw jute. The values of conductivity are the lower in the case of bleached jute samples among all the three types of samples. As, after chemical treatment, crystalline areas increases or in other words amorphous region decreases, treated jute samples remain comparatively in dry condition than that of jute sample. So, the values of electrical conductivity decrease after chemical treatment.

Objectives:

To study the comparison of electrical conductivity among raw and treated jute fiber

Methodology:

Raw jute sample were taken from the middle section of Bangla Tossa B grade jute (BTB).The samples were scoured by 3g/L Sodium Carbonate. Materials liquor ratio was 1:20. The raw jute and solution were boiled for about 1hr at a temperature of 90⁰C. In this way wax, fat and some portion of lignin from natural raw jute were removed. Then fiber were mercerized, bleached and prepared for thermal conductivity measurement. To m measurements of the values of conductivity of different types of samples at first the tablets were kept one by one between the two electrodes, inserted in a hole of a highly insulating material (Resistivity = 10¹⁹Ω-m) in order to avoid stray capacitance and unwanted noises from outside of the experiment set up. The three dimensional size of the Ebonite sheet were: 2.5 inches, width = 2.5 inches and thickness = 1.5 inches. A screw fixes up one side of the electrode and the other side was movable. After inserting the sample in between the two electrodes, the movable side was pushed towards the sample so that the sample has contact with the two electrodes as well as no air gap remains between the electrodes and tablet. This movable screw was fixed up so that the surfaces of the two electrodes had good contact with the tablet. The whole system was kept in a metallic box. The terminals of the two electrodes were connected through a loss free wire into the wire into the jack of Impedance Analyzer. From the Impedance Analyzer conductance at a particular frequency was calculated directly. In this way at various frequencies (50Hz to 5MHz) conductance of several of samples was calculated using equation. From equation conductivity σ has been calculated for each and every type of samples at different ranges of frequency.

Achievement/Findings:

A C conductivity’s of raw, mercerized and bleached jute fibers at the frequency range of Hz to 1 MHz have been measured. For raw jute fiber the values of ac conductivity’s vary from 1.18 x 10^-8 Siemens/m to 1.16 x 10^-5 Siemens/m from 1.03 x 10^-8 Siemens/m to 1.02 x 10^-5 Siemens/m for mercerized jute fiber and from 8.83 x 10^-9 Siemens/m to 8.86 x 10^-6 Siemens/m for bleached jute fiber. From these results it that after chemical treatment the values of conductivity’s of treated jute fibers fall compared to raw jute sample. The decreases of the value of conductivity’s in the case of mercerized and bleached jute samples are important. Conductivity decreased after alkali treatment (mercerized samples) and the value of conductivity of jute fibers decreased more in the case of bleached jute sample.
