Demonstration of Available Machinery and Equipment in Farmers' Fields

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The productivity of T. Aman-wheat has been reported stagnated or in some cases declined remarkably. Low yield of wheat following T. Aman has been identified as the cause of low yield wheat. It has been established that there is a yield decrease of 40 kg/day/ha in wheat if it is sown beyond November. Timely establishment of wheat is very important. Among the options given thrust, power tiller operated seeder (PTOS) has been found very effective to improve yields with timely establishment by reducing turn-around time to zero days. The results showed that early seeding of wheat with power tiller operated seeder (PTOS) in comparison to conventional practice gave 29% (2.95 t/ha) more grain yields.

Objectives:

To popularize the power tiller operated seeder ( PTOS) to farmers,
To evaluate performances of PTOS for higher productivity and
To know farmers’ reaction about PTOS.

Methodology:

The activity was initiated with Chinese Hand Tractor (CHT) for wheat seeding during 2002-2003. Rabi season and continued in 2003-2004 also. Crop was grown under farmers’ management in 1.5 hectares of land by 16 farmers. Seeding was completed within November and under conservational tillage seeding took place in 1^st decade of December. The treatments were i) crop establishment by farmers' method, ii) crop establishment by available machinery at the site. The available machinery were i) CHT, ii) bed former cum seed and fertilizer drill, iii) animal drawn bed former cum seeder. The RCB design with minimum 6 replications farmers' fields in partnership with them.

Achievement/Findings:

The wheat yield obtained with power tiller operated seeder ( PTOS) (2.95 t/ha) was 29% higher compared to conventional tillage (2.27 t/ha). Early seeding contributed to the higher grain yields of wheat. The results clearly showed that wheat yield could be improved using PTOS in seeding and necessary efforts were needed to promote the use in wheat growing areas.
