Irrespective of cropping system, LCC based N management alone significantly increased grain yields over FP for rice  and wheat. Yields of both rice and wheat were further increased when LCC was used to manage N alone with other nutrients at recommended rates. Improved crop management like weed control and line transplanting in rice and additional 1 or 2 irrigation at maximum and flowering stages and line seeding in wheat further increased grain yields.  Leaf color chart use significantly increased AEN in rice from 15 kg/ kg N in FP to 21-24 kg/ kg N in Boro season. In wheat, these increases were from 10 kg/ kg in FP to 12-18 kg/ kg. In calculation of added cost, cost of additional fertilizer, labor and irrigation (in wheat only) were considered. The use of LCC alone provided Tk. 2663- 3446 ha-1 as additional income to the rice farmers. In wheat this value was Tk. 1043 ha-1. The added benefits were further increased with other nutrients at recommended rates and with improved management, but the increases were proportionately less due to increased cost of fertilizers and labors. The results indicated that N management by the use of LCC, incased grain yields, N use efficiency, agronomic efficiency and provided additional benefits to the farmers.

  Validation

To refine or further improve the LCC based N fertilizer management recommendation, and train farmers and extension personnel on it’s use and implementation in rice-rice and rice-wheat cropping systems.

Farmers’ participatory on-farm research conducted during 2000-2001 under PETRRA funded sub-project (SP-10) using leaf color chart (LCC) to manage nitrogen (N) fertilizer (urea in rice showed increased in yields and projects for farmers). The results revealed that only LCC-based N management in T. Aman-Boro cropping, on an average, improved the grain yields of BR11 and BRRI dhan28 by 14 and 10%, respectively over the farmers’ practice. There was 16% increase in grain yield of BRRI dhan39 due to adopting LCC-based N management over farmers’ practices in T. Aman-wheat cropping pattern. Validation of the results was started in T. Aman 2002 in 100 farmers’ fields in 10 blocks in Sadar Upazilas of Meherpur, Kushtia, Chuadanga and Jhenaidah districts. The validation trial was continued in 2002-2003 Boro/ Rabi seasons. The trial was conducted at 10 sites, 5 for each of rice-rice and rice-wheat cropping system. The objectives were to refine or further improve the LCC based N fertilizer management recommendation, and train farmers and extension personnel on it’s use and implementation in rice-rice and rice-wheat cropping systems. The number of farmers’ fields per site varied from 4 to 10. The treatments were: (i) Farmers’ practice (FP), (ii) Leaf color chart based N management (LCCN), (iii) Site specific nutrient management (SSNM), (iv) Integrated crop and nutrient management (ICNM), and (v) Recommended fertilizer management (RFM). In rice, 4 treatments (FP, LCCN, SSNM, and ICNM) and in wheat 5 treatments (FP, RFM, LCCN, SSNM, and ICNM) were tested.

Leaf Colour Chart based N management alone significantly increased grain yields over FP for rice (0.4 t/ha) and wheat (0.3 t/ha) irrespective of cropping systems.  Improved crop management like weed control and line transplanting in rice and additional 1 or 2 irrigation at maximum and flowering stages and line seeding in wheat further increased grain yields. The agronomic efficiency of applied N (AEN) and added benefit of LCC used in N management for rice and wheat are calculated. Leaf color chart use significantly increased AEN in rice from 15 kg/ kg N in FP to 21-24 kg/ kg N in Boro season. In wheat, these increases were from 10 kg/ kg in FP to 12-18 kg/ kg. Added benefit was calculated as the difference between added gross return and added cost compared with FP. Added gross return equals to additional yield multiplied by price of yield (paddy).
