Economic Process of Dyeing of Jute Fabrics by Sulphur Dyes.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study has been carried out to develop a standard and economical process of dyeing of carpet backing cloth in dyeing laboratory of BJRI from 2001 to 2002 by sulphur dyes. Jute fabrics were chemically modified with 18% caustic soda at 50^OC to obtain maximum dye absorption. Successive batches of jute fabrics were dyed with sulphur back at 70-80 ^OC in the standing bath one after another with addition of three fourth of the original quantities of the dyes. The study also suggested to reduce some conventional expenditure like auxiliaries and overhead cost to make the process more cost effective for dyeing of jute goods. The wash fastness properties of all the batches were same. Rubbing fastness in dry condition is higher than wet condition and a slight change of light fastness was found for all batches of the experiment. So, the fastness properties of all the dyed jute fabrics in all consideration were found satisfactory without any after treatment.

Objectives:

To development of of process of dyeing of jute fabrics using sulphur dyes.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of dyeing and textile physics division of BJRI in 2000 to 2001. Batches of 10kg of CBC were uses as substitute for conducting dyeing experiment. Firstly jute fabrics were signed and then desired with distance at 55-60^OC for 40 minutes. It was then washed and dried. The dried fabric was then treated with 18% caustic soda at 50^OC in a 3-bowl padding mangle. The fabric was then washed with hot followed by cold water. It was then dried in a heat setting machine. In order to dissolve sulphur dyes the required amount of dyestuff was mixed with sodium carbonate to make paste with hot water and paste was then solubilized by pouring hot NaS solution with constant stirring. Jute fabrics were then entered into the dye solution at 50^OC in a auto close Jigger machine and temperature raised gradually to 70-80^OC. the dyeing was continued for one hour at this temperature. Then the first batch was unloaded quickly from the dye bath and exposed to the air for 10-15 minutes. It was then rinsed, soaped and finally washed and dried. For the next batch three fourth of the original quantities of dye, NaS, Na₂CO₃ and common salt were added to the standing bath in every case and the fabrics were treated as above. Wash fastness, staining, light fastness and rubbing fastness were measured by standard method in the Textile Physics Division. The wash fastness of the samples were performed according to ISO test no.-3 and for light fastness test, the sample were exposed to direct sunlight in a device for 150 hours, the change of colour was assessed visually with the original sample.

Achievement/Findings:

When jute fiber is treated with alkali, a wooly property is developed and flexibility is increased. It was found that the wash fastness and rubbing fastness of the dyed samples were good in both dry and wet conditions and there was no staining on adjacent white cloth. The change in color of dye fabrics was excellent. The methods also produced bright, lustrous shade and there was no change of shade for all the batches. It was clearly found that the experiment showed that a small amount of dyestuff in comparison to normal dyeing were required for producing deep and bright black shade for dyeing of jute goods. On the other hand, the purposes of reducing cost of dyeing of successive batches were dyed in the standing dye liquor to save dyes, chemicals and time for much less than that of reactive or vat dyes and their application on jute will reduce the price of jute goods to a great extent.
