Contribution of Different Green Manures to Phosphate Nutrition of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the relative contribution of different green manuring crops to phosphate nutrition of sugarcane in two consecutive cropping seasons of 1995-96 and 1996-97 at Patuadangi and Jamalpur farms of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills under Old Hamilayan Piedmont Plain Soil. The experiment was set up comprising of three intercrops viz., sugarcane with indigo (/ndigofera tinctoria), dhaincha (Sesbania rastrata), sunhemp (Grato/aria juncea) and control with no intercrop in main plots and four different rates of phosphorus (0,60,120 and 180 kg P₂0₅ha^-1) in sub plots. Shunhemp (G. juncea) produced the highest biomass yield and P-contribution to soil. Significantly higher number of tillers, millable cane and yield of sugarcane per hectare were obtained in both the seasons and locations where 120 kg P₂0₅ ha^-1 was applied.

Objectives:

To study the relative contribution of different green manuring crops to P nutrition of sugarcane.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Patudangi and Jamalpur farm of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain Soil in two consecutive cropping seasons of 1995- 96 and 1996-97. The used sugarcane variety in the study was Isd 25. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four replications comprising of three levels of intercrops viz. sugarcane with indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), dhaincha (Sesbania rastrata), sun hemp (Grato/aria juncea) and with no intercrop in main plots and four different rates of phosphorus (0,60,120 and 180 kg P205 ha^-1) in sub-plots. The following treatments were accommodated in the experiment.

1 . Main plot: Green manuring (as intercrop), M₁ - No intercrop (fallow), M₂ - Cultivation of Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria L.), M₃ - Cultivation of Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata), M₄ - Cultivation of sunhemp (Groto/aria juncea).

2. Sub-plot: Levels of phosphorus, P₁ - Control (No phosphorus), P₂ - 60 kg P₂0₅ ha^{-1 ,}P₃ - 120 kg P₂0₅ ha^-1,P₄ -180 kg P₂0₅ ha^-1

For both the cropping seasons of study, green manure seeds were sown in main plot during early part of April and ploughed down to incorporated into the soil during early monsoon at their 60 days of age. Before incorporation of green manures their individual dry matter yield was recorded. In case of sugarcane, two eyed soil bed settlings of 45 day age were transplanted in main fields during December and harvested in January after 14 months of age at full maturity of the crop. Recommended rates of NKS were applied for all treatments' and the rates were 170 kg N ha^-1as urea, 222 kg K₂0 ha^-1 as muriate of potash and 33 kg S ha^-1as gypsum. Full amount of P from triple superphosphate calculated for each treatment and S from gypsum along with 1/3 rd of muriate of potash for K were applied at the time of transplanting of settlings in the main field. The basal 1/3 rd of urea for N was applied after two weeks of transplantation. The rest two splits of N and K were applied at the time of tiller initiation and tiller completion stages of the crop. Curaterr 5G was applied @ 40 kg ha^-1to control white grubs and top shoot borer. Necessary intercultural operation were done as per normal practice.

Achievement/Findings:

In conclusion, green manuring with sugarcane may be suggested to improve both soil and cane yield. Sunhemp should be preferred to select as a companion green manuring crop with sugarcane. However, dhaincha and indigo may also be practiced as a profitable green manuring crop intercropped with sugarcane. Furthermore, green manures after incorporation to soil can be considered only as a supplemental use of P nutrition to sugarcane but not a total replacement of inorganic P supply. In addition to green manures, the application 'of phosphorus at the rate of 120 kg P20S ha^-1 gave the highest yield of sugarcane cultivated under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain soil.
