Study on Production and Consumption Pattern of Poultry Meat and Egg in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to determine the production and consumption pattern of poultry meat and egg in rural and urban areas and to identify the factors of responsible for demand and supply of poultry meat and egg. The study revealed that number of local poultry per urban and rural households was 0.56 and 16.26 respectively. The annual egg productions per layer / per household were 48.16, 280.04 and 57.64 for local, commercial layer and duck respectively. According to survey, per capita daily consumption for 1995 and 2002 were 6.04gm., 7.64gm. for poultry meat and 6.31gm. & 4.82 gm. for egg respectively.

Objectives:

a) To determine the production and consumption pattern of meat and egg in rural and urban areas of Bangladesh.

b) To identify the factor responsible for demand and supply of poultry meat and egg.

c) To determine the income elasticity of demand for poultry meat and egg, and

d) To explore future policy implications.

Methodology:

From 4 geographical regions, 4 Division districts, namely Rajshahi of Northern region, Sylhet & Chittagong of South-eastern region, Khulna of Western region and Old Dhaka of Central region was selected for the study. From each of 4 regions one municipal area (Mahalla) and one rural area (Village) was selected. One hundred households were selected randomly from each of Mahallas and Villages. Thus, there were, in all, 800 households for final investigations. Of those 100 households, 20 were city dwellers/villagers, 20 assembly traders, 20 inter-district traders, 20 aratdars/wholesalers and 20 were retailers. From each of these selected households, data on types of poultry reared, production od egg, marketing channels, marketing cost and margin, marketing problem, consumption of poultry meat and eggs, factors affecting demand for and supply of poultry meat and egg and sources of poultry meat and egg and sources of income were collected.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that the local poultry per urban and rural household were 0.56 and 16.26, respectively. The broiler production per rural household was 40.72. The commercial layer productions per rural households were .38 and 3.31, respectively. The duck production per rural household was 5.58. The broiler and production in the urban households was not observed in the study areas. The annual egg productions per layer/per household were 48.16, 280.40 and 57.64 for local, commercial layer and duck, respectively. The marketing channels for poultry and egg were identified. The marketing cost, gross marketing margin, net marketing margin and the rate of return on capital were 8.75, 25.79, 17.14 and 20.69 percent of the price paid by the consumers for poultry and 17.11, 32.05, 14.94 and 17.57 percent of the price paid by the consumers for egg, respectively. During 1995 per capita daily consumption according to our survey and Household Expenditure Survey were 6.04gm & 5.45gm for poultry meat and 4082gm & 4.2gm for egg, respectively. Per capita daily consumption according to during our survey 2002 and Household Expenditure Survey for 1995-96 &1991-92 were 7.64gm, 4.00gm & 2.00gm for poultry meat and 6.31gm, 3.20gm & 4.70gm for egg , respectively.
