The study was undertaken to identify the socioeconomic factors, constrains and profitability of Buffalo rearing in some rural areas of Bangladesh. The analysis of cost of rearing buffalo showed that the cost of rearing buffalo/farm/annum was the highest Tk.25614 in Kustia, while the lowest Tk. 2876 in Barishal, with an average of Tk.7661 for all sites. The analysis of income of the buffalo rearing farmers showed that gross income per farm per annum was highest Tk.75046 in Kustia, while the lowest Tk.43606 in Rajshahi, with an average of Tk.59565 for all sites. The benefit cost ratio was the highest 1.50:1 in Moulavibazar, while the lowest 1.17:1 in Patuakhali, with an average of 1.28:1 for all sites. Regarding the constraints to buffalo raising, farmers mentioned that the feed problem was the highest (77.50%), followed by grazing land (40%), lack of veterinary services and medicine (26%) and theft of buffalo (20%) in the study area.

  Buffalo

a). To determine the socio-economic characteristics of buffalo raising farmars

b). To estimate the cost and returns from buffalo

c). To identify the constraints to buffalo raising, and

d). To suggest some policy implications.

Six buffalo concentrated areas, namely Patuakhali, Barisal, Cox`s Bazar, Kustia, Rajshahi and Moulvibazar were selected for the study. A total of 150 buffalo raising farmers taking 25 from each site were randomly selected for the study. For collection of data, a pre-designed questionnaire was prepared and after field tests, it was finalized for investigation. Investigators were given training on it so that they could be able to collect data from the field. The period of data collection was confined during July to September 2005. Data included household income, literacy, livestock production, milk production, and productive reproductive traits of buffalo. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics like mean, percentage and ratios. The data were processed using computer Microsoft Excel Spread sheet program.
