Impact of Micro-credit Provided by Dls on Goat Production for Reducing Poverty in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study result showed that small farmer having 4 family members, earned annual income of Tk. 35000 and their main occupation was agriculture. On average, they received Tk. 5223 against a demand Tk. 6995. The repayment rate of credit was 12.12%. Investing this credit, they earned and annual profit of Tk. 5595. The major source of earning was from the closing stock value of goat Tk. 5272 (49.39%) followed by sale of goat Tk.3566 (33.41%), meat Tk. 410 (3.84%), milk Tk. 398.25 (3.73%), skins Tk. 89.5 (0.84%). They indicated that their kacha houses were reduced by 41.90%, while ting-shed and pucca houses were increased, 128.57% and 80% respectively in post-intervention period. Own tube-wells were increased by 146.42%, while hired tube-wells were decreased by 47.05%. Katcha latrines were decreased by 44.26%, while semi-pucca and pucca latrines were increased by 75% and 166.67%, respectively. Household assets, like Tv, radio, sofa, table, chair, Khat and almira were increased by 1566.67%, 53.49%, 200%,18.89%, 40.19%,140.62% and 92.30%, respectively. Home consumption of milk, egg, meat, fish, fruits and others were increased by 64.56%, 46.91%,47.76%, 31.13%, 45.24% and 31.04%, respectively. Now-a-days, women are participating in household decision making activities.

Objectives:

i) To analyze the socioeconomic characteristics of the loan recipient goat farmers.

ii) To examine the utilization pattern of micro-credit for goat production.

iii) To analyze the livelihood changes of the loan recipient goat farmers and

iv) To identify the problems faced by the loan recipient goat farmers.

Methodology:

For meeting the objectives of the study, data was collected from four sites of DLS covered by credit facilities. The sites were Gazipur, Comilla, Dinajpur, and Chuadanga. The list of the loanee farmers was collected from DLS. From the list 100 loanee farmers were selected following a simple random sampling technic. For collection of data, 3 sets of questionnaire were pre-designed and field tested. After field-test, the questionnaire were finalized for investigation. The study was confined during January to March 2006.
