Compensatory Growth Response in a Polyculture System of Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium Rosenbergii and Indian Major Carps: Potential Benefit for Rural Fish Farmers in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The vast inland water resources of Bangladesh are suitable for growing many species of freshwater prawn, especially Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Freshwater prawn is cultivated mainly in south-western part of this country ally in Khulna, Begerhat and Satkhira districts. The most spectacular development in commercial prawn farming has recently taken place in Begerhat area. Since the early 1980’s prawn farming has become one of the financially most attractive investment opportunities in many coastal areas of Bangladesh. About 30000 MT headless frozen shrimp and prawn are being exported to Japan, Europe and American markets, which increases every year. As the demand of Bangladeshi shrimp increases in the world market, simultaneously the culture area increases horizontally. The national average shrimp production per hectare is still low, varies from 250-300 kg/ha.

Objectives:

1. To reduce the food cost in polyculture of prawn and Indian major carps,

2. To obtain the harvestable size of fish in expected time when demand and price are high,

3. To improve management of personal time,

4. To maintain water quality in a better way.

Methodology:

There are many categories of prawn culture systems. All the systems are characterized by the size of farm, optimal stocking density, feed and feeding, water management and other support facilities. Considering the management point of view, prawn culture system in Bangladesh can be categories into extensive traditional and improved extensive system. Although semi- intensive is being practiced in some areas in the coastal districts these system is still experimental basis and sustainable production has not yet been achieved. However, extensive and improved extensive system still remains in major practice. The currently study was designed to evaluate the influences of various feeding regime on proximate composition and compensatory growth of prown and rui in polyculture system of different combination. In addition, an attempt will be made to identify some of the body composition that could be involved in the increase in growth performance during the realimentation period.

Achievement/Findings:

Six size pond in the field laboratory of the faculty of fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. From the result it is shown that, the polyculture of prown and rui is feasible and in this type of culture, if rui is released to a low density, it does not need any extra feed. Regarding growth compensation, everyday feeding and alternate day feeding resulted same growth of prawn. However, growth in T3 where prawns were fed at every 2 day interval could not compensate their growth and average weight at final harvest was much lower than other two treatments. In the prawn and sarpunti trial the growth compensation was observed both in prawn and sarpunti. However, fish in treatment –C could not compensate their growth and average weight at final harvest was much lower than other two treatments. It is evident that, prawn with rohu and or srapunti can be cultured at alternate day feeding protocol and feed cost can be substantially reduced in conventional polyculture system.
