Screening of Jute Germplasm for Resistance Tolerance Against Yellow Mite

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Manikganj Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute ( BJRI) during the year 2011 . Fifty accessions of indigenous and fifty accessions of exotic olitorius were sown in lines in the field set by Gene Bank Department at JAES, Manikganj along with O-9897 and O-72 as check variety to select tolerant/resistant accession against yellow mite.Among the fifty accessions of indigenous and fifty accessions of exotic olitorius, none of the accessions were found tolerant/resistant to yellow mite. However, only 7 accessions (3756, 4739, 5133, 5149, 5150, 5155 and 5162) of Indigenous and 17 (1770, 2397, 2509, 4551, 4553, 4560, 4564, 4567, 4572, 4573, 4574, 4575, 4577, 4580, 4691, 4692 and 4694) of exotic olitorius showed lowest rating score ‘2’ .

Objectives:

1. To explore sources of resistance against target pests of jute and allied fibre crops.

2. To identify resistance germ plasm against yellow mite and to develop mite resistant variety

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Manikganj Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute ( BJRI) during the year 2011 . Fifty accessions of indigenous and fifty accessions of exotic olitorius were sown in lines in the field set by Gene Bank Department at JAES, Manikganj along with O-9897 and O-72 as check variety to select tolerant/resistant accession against yellow mite. Each line was 2m long and data were taken during the peak period (May-June) of infestation. Percentage and intensity of infestation (rating) were taken till to death of top shoot. The intensity of damage by yellow mite was scored following 0-5 rating score 0- Fresh and healthy leaves, without any changes in colour .1- Slight changes in colour of leaves.2- Curling of leaves .3- 1 to 3 infested leaves dropped from the top . 4- All infested leaves fall prematurely but top shoot alive . 5- Top shoot dead.

Identified sources of resistance tolerance of jute germ plasm will be used to develop yellow mite resistant or tolerant varieties which will be helpful for the breeder and as well as for the jute growers. only 7 accessions (3756, 4739, 5133, 5149, 5150, 5155 and 5162) of Indigenous and 17 (1770, 2397, 2509, 4551, 4553, 4560, 4564, 4567, 4572, 4573, 4574, 4575, 4577, 4580, 4691, 4692 and 4694) of exotic olitorius showed lowest rating score ‘2’
