Studies on Intrinsic and Extrinsic Properties of Raw Jute for Improving the Grading System and Market Potentiality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen tossa jute samples of different grades were collected from seven jute mills Carpeting Jute Mills (CJM), Jessore Jute Industries (JJI), Eastern Jute Mills (EJM), Aleem Jute Mills (AJM), Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills (PJJM), The Crescent Jute Mills (TCJM), Star Jute Mills (SJM) of khulna zone. ourteen samples for tossa jute were examined. No white samples were collected. It was found from data that sample 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 13 matched with any of the specific grading score. But sample 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 did not match with any grade score. So eight tossa samples matched with the grading score and they could be considered as album component.

Objectives:

To determine the essential physical properties of raw jute to develop a grading album for promoting the usages of the proposed scorecard system of scientific grading for both the varieties tossa and white.

Methodology:

Fourteen tossa jute samples of different grades were collected from seven jute mills Carpeting Jute Mills (CJM), Jessore Jute Industries (JJI), Eastern Jute Mills (EJM), Aleem Jute Mills (AJM), Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills (PJJM), The Crescent Jute Mills (TCJM), Star Jute Mills (SJM) of khulna zone. Bundle Strength Test: To measure bundle strength, a small bundle of fibre was combed to make it parallel for each test. Then a reading was taken maintaing all the procedure for Pressley Fibre Strength Tester. >Fineness Test: WIRA airflow fineness tester was used to measure fineness of the sample. Whiteness % and Brightness% measurement: Whiteness% and Brightness% were measured in percentage comparing with the whiteness percentage of MgO which is considered as hundred percent white.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of different essential physical parameters for scorecard system of scientific grading were BT₁-50, BT₂-43, BT₃-35, BT₄-28, BT₅-20, BT₆-12.75 for tossa jute. According to the total score, it was found that sample 2 and 4 matched with BT₃ and sample 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13 matched with BT₄. Sample 6 possessed 34.5 score where full score of BT₃ is 35. In that case sample 6 could be considered as BT₃ without any discount of price. Sample 8, 10 and 14 stood between BT₃ and BT₄. They could be considered as BT₃ with some reasonable discount of price as described in note 8 of proposed scorecard system of scientific grading. As well as sample 9 could be considered as BT₄and Sample 12 could be considered as BT₄with some higher price. It was found from data that sample 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 13 matched with any of the specific grading score. But sample 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 did not match with any grade score.
