Standardization of Jute Varieties Both Tossa and White Released by BJRI on the Basis of Objective Assessment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute fibre of different varieties released by BJRI (tossa and white) were collected from two regional station Faridpur and Kishorgonj to assess the different parameters of jute fibre bundle strength, fineness, tex, Whiteness% and Brightness% to standardize those jute fibre. Two tossa varieties O–9897, O-72 and three white varieties CVL-1, BJC-2142 and BJC-2197 were examined. It was found that CVL-1 variety of Kishorgonj possessed the highest, bundle strength value amongst all the white jute. On the other hand BJC-2142 variety of Kishorgonj obtained the lowest micronear value that meant the finest fibre amongst the entire white sample.

To establish a quality map in relation to its physical parameters of the released jute varieties both tossa and white by Bangladesh Jute Research Institute

Methodology:

Jute fibre of different varieties released by Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) (tossa and white) were collected from two regional station Faridpur and Kishorgonj to assess the different parameters of jute fibre bundle strength, fineness, tex, Whiteness% and Brightness% to standardize those jute fibre. The following physical properties were determined in standard atmosphere condition with a relative humidity of 65+ 2 percent and a temperature of 20Bundle Strength test: Bundle Strength of fibres was determined by Pressley Fibre Strength Tester using zero gauge length. The broken bundle was then weighed by a precision balance. Fineness Test:Fineness was determined by BJTRA (British Jute Trade Research Association) fineness testing apparatus which operates on airflow method. The resistance to airflow was indicated in a flow meter, which is calibrated in terms of fibre diameter in micron Linear Density: Linear density in tex was determined by cut-middle method. ; Whiteness % (colour) and Brightness % (lustre):Colour and Lustre of the fibre was determined by photo volt (Leokometer) of sensitivity 4a using green and blue filter respectively. The measurement was done with a comparative standard of Magnesium oxide (MgO) block of 100% reflectance.

The work was taken to standardize both tossa and white jute released by Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). Two varieties O-9897 and O-72 from tossa jute and two varities CVL-1 and BJC-2197 from white jute were collected from Faridpur and Kishorgonj regional station. Five parameters as bundle strength, fineness, linear density, whiteness% and brightness% of the samples were determined. From data it was found that bundle strength of O-9897 appeared to better than that of O-72. It was found that fineness of tossa jute fibre of Kishorgonj better than that of Faridpur. Two varieties of white jute fibre were tested. It was found that CVL-1 variety of Kishorgonj possessed the highest, bundle strength value amongst all the white jute. On the other hand BJC-2142 variety of Kishorgonj obtained the lowest micronear value that meant the finest fibre amongst the entire white sample. The aesthetic properties of the sample O-9897 variety was better than that of O-72 in relation both whiteness% and brightness%. CVL-1 and BJC-2142 varieties of Faridpur and Kishorgonj station possessed almost same whiteness%. On the other brightness% of the both varieties collected from Faridpur and Kishorgonj obtained almost same values.
