Studies on the Development of the Properties of Chemically Modified Jute Blended Knitted Sweater of Different Structures

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An assessment on the property of knitted sweater of different structures from chemically modified jute, jute-acrylic and jute-polyster blended yarns had been made in terms of different parameters. The result had been compared with those of the properties of 100% acrylic sweater. From the results it was seen that the properties of jute-Acrylic (80:20) blended sweater of interlock structure with shaker stitch were better than that of the properties of jute-Acrylic (80:20) blended sweater of plain structure of jersey knit and very much nearer to that of the properties of 100% acrylic sweater

Objectives:

To assess on the property of knitted sweater of different structures from chemically modified jute, jute-acrylic and jute-polyster blended yarns had been made in terms of different parameters.

Methodology:

The yarns for experimental sample of knitted sweater of different structures were collected from the Mechanical Processing division of BJRI. Then the above yarns were chemically modified (woollenised and softened) from the wet processing department of Pilot Plant and Processing Division of BJRI. Three types (Interlock structure with shaker stitch, Rib structure with drop needle stitch and plain structure with Jersey stitch) structure were selected for producing the experimental sweater. The sweaters were made from the export oriented knitted Industry. The yarns for these experimental sweaters were 100% jute, 100% Acrylic, jute-Acrylic (80:20) and jute-polyester (80:20). Three gauge knitting machines were used for producing the experimental sweater. Various parameters were tested for the knitted sweaters. Among the tested parameter, the machine setting length, length after knitting, yarn breakage, physical feeling, first and second wash with detergent, after one month hanging were tested in the knitting industry. The thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, moisture regain, abrasion resistance, bending length,and flexural rigidity were tested from textile Physics division of BJRI. The presence of hydrocarbon and health hazards composition were tested from BCSIR Laboratory of Dhaka.

Achievement/Findings:

Jute was softened with different types of chemical. The yarns which were used for 3 gauge knitting machine for making sweater also tried for 5 gauge knitting machine. In that case, production were strictly hampered due to yarn breakage and compactness of fabric. It also hindered the operation of the machine. Hence, it was suggested that ply woollenised yarn of 7.5 lb/spy, was suitable for 3 gauge knitting machine for different structural product. Here the sweaters were produced with three different structure viz. Interlock structure with shaker stitch, Rib structure with drop needle stitch and plain structure with jersey stitch. Among the three structural knitted sweaters, sweater of interlock structure showed comparatively acceptable properties than the other structural sweater The elongation problems for jute and jute-acrylic blended sweaters after different operation viz. length after knitting, length after 1^st and 2^nd wash with detergent and after one month hanging has removed significantly through interlock structure. The properties like thermal conductivity and thermal resistance also improved in Interlock structure than the other structure (Rib structure and plain structure) knitted sweaters. All the properties had been compared with the standard 100% acrylic sweater. Research will be followed for further development of the sweater.
