Contribution of Different Nutrients from Organic and Inorganic Sources on Rice Yield.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fertilizer application is one of the most widely accepted practices for increasing crop yields and farm profits. Fertilizer being a popular but costly input, information on its correct use is always sought and needed. Long term experiment is unique in the sense to know the crop yields a soil support on its own nutrient reserve and gives an idea how much increase in crop yield can be expected by using fertilizers. Grain yield was considered as an index to measure the percent contribution for soil and fertilizers. Single rice cropped flood prone fertilizer soil of Habiganj farm contributed 71% to yield that of fertilizer was 29% while N alone contributed yield about 24%. In Boro season, under flood free condition, double rice cropped soil itself contributed for 52% rice yield while that of fertilizer for 48% of total yield. Similarly the contributed for soil was 74% and that of fertilizer was 26% to total rice grain yield in T. Aman season. The percent contribution of N,P, K in increasing grain yield across the locations was 22.7, 9.3 & 14.5 in Boro season and 14.2, 4.4, 6.5 in T. Aman season.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of soils and fertilizers as a whole of individual element with emphasis on seasons to rice yield.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur. The average contribution of organic materials (rice straw, cow dung, dhaincha) to grain yield was 13.5% in T. Aman season and its residual effect in Boro season was 10%. In another experiment mungbean stover addition to different fertilizer management practices i.e. no fertilizer, farmers practice (FP) (NPKS @ 70-13-17-10 kg/ha), soil test based fertilizer dose (NPKS @ 90-26-17-10 kg/ha) and STB dose with cow dung (@ 5 t/ha) in first crop, produced always higher rice yield.

Achievement/Findings:

From above finding it may be concluded that integrated nutrient management raises the yield potential to a level that are not obtained by recommended rates of fertilizer alone.
