Effect of Continuous Wetland Intensive Rice Cropping on the Performance of Hyv Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was initiated on a permanent layout in 1971. Since then rice crops have been grown per year keeping the soil perpetually wet. Initially the plot was divided into 4 sub-plots and 4 treatments. Rice yield in this field gradually decreased with time attributed to a decrease in available S content of the soil, which was confirmed through soil-plant analysis and greenhouse studies. Continuous submergence induced S deficiency in this plot. In 1984, the treatments were modified with the inclusion of S as gypsum. The application of S brought about dramatic improvement in the growth and yield of rice.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of soils and fertilizers as a whole of individual element with emphasis on seasons to rice yield.

Methodology:

Since Boro season 2000, the treatments were modified again and experimental plots were redesigned. Six treatments viz. control, reverse (NPKSZnCu), NPK, NPKS, NPKSZn & NPKSZnCu were imposed. Two MV rice were tested in each cropping season, BR1 & BR26 in T. Aus, BR11 % BRRI dhan32 in T. Aman and BRRI dhan 28 & BRRI dhan29 in Boro season. The NPK doses were 140-25-80, 60-15-80 & 60-10-60 for Boro, T. Aman and T. Aus respectively. Sulphur, Zn and Cu were applied at the rate of 10, 4 & 1 kg/ha in Boro season only. It is a non-replicated experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that under low fertilizer condition there is a varietal difference in yield performance i.e. genotypic variation occurs. In Boro season, the application of S along with NPK increased grain yield of BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28 by 0.84 and 0.74 t/ha respectively over NPK treatment. No appreciable residual effect of applied S was observed in the following Aus and Aman seasons. The substantial influence of Zn on grain yield of BRRI dhan29 was observed. Improvement of grain yield of Aus and Aman due to application of Zn and Cu was also observed. The most significant observation in this experiment is that application of complete fertilization to the control plot (reverse control treatment) improved grain yield to the level continuous fertilized plot.
