Study of Heavy Metal Contents in Poultry Manure.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Poultry manure is a good source of macro and micronutrients and already has been identified as a potential source of organic matter. Questions have been raised that poultry litter may contain sufficient quantities of heavy metals. Now a days heavy metals are a great concern because they are immobile in soil and accumulate in the plough layer of the soil and do not degrade over time, which may contaminate our soils, toxic to plants and finally may enter in to food chain. Now a day there is growing awareness that the heavy metal content of the soil is increasing at many locations may cross the critical limit with time. It is the prime time to look into matter. Keeping this point in mind a study was undertaken with a view to asses the heavy metal contents in poultry litter collected from different poultry farms. The heavy metal contents in the poultry litter varies depending upon the composition of poultry feed of different poultry farm. Among the six poultry farm samples, zine concentration was 323.9 ± 68.9 ppm, cupper 77.4 ± 26.5 ppm, manganese 491 ± 131.1 ppm and arsenic .09± .3 ppm.

Objectives:

To determine the heavy metal contents of poultry manure using standard analytical procedure.

Methodology:

Six different poultry farms were selected, two in Kashimpur and others four at Sreepur area in Gazipur district. Fresh poultry litters were collected from the selected farms and samples were processed.

The heavy metal contents in the poultry litter varies depending upon the composition of poultry feed of different poultry farm. Among the six poultry farm samples, zine concentration was 323.9 ± 68.9 ppm, cupper 77.4 ± 26.5 ppm, manganese 491 ± 131.1 ppm and arsenic .09± .3 ppm.
