Physico-mechanical Characteristics of Mesta (hibiscus Sabdariffa L.) and Kenaf (h. Cannabinus L.) Fibre

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physico-mechanical characteristics of the fibre of the new varieties viz.Mesta HS-24 (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) and Kenaf HC-2 (H. cannabinus L) developed by BJRI (Agri) has been studied and compared. The visco-elastic behavior of the fibres of the two varieties, not unlike jute, was similar and the effect of visco-elasticity was almost nil.i.e the stress-strain curve for both of the varieties was straight almost up to the breaking point. The bundle strength, bursting energy and breaking tenacity of Kenaf HC-2 were comparatively greater than those of Mesta HS-24.The breaking elongation was similar. But the fibre of Kenaf HC-2 was slightly finer than that of Mesta HS-24.The fibres of both the varieties were coarser than jute and the quality ratio of yarn spun from them was also lower than that of jute yarn. However the fibres of the varieties are cheaper than that of jute. It is, therefore, an advantage for producing economic batch composition for various jute products and thicker yarns for manufacturing Geo-textiles.

Objectives:

To study the load-elongation behavior and certain physico-mechanical properties of the new varieties of Mesta HS-24 and Kenaf HC-2 fibres.

Methodology:

Fibre samples of Mesta HS-24 and Kenaf HC-2, taking 40 kg for each, were collected from Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh jute Research Institute during the season 1985-86. For sampling 10 kg of Mesta HS-24 and 10 kg of Kenaf HC-2 were randomly separated from the two populations, each of the remaining portions being used to spin into 8 lbs and 10 lbs/spy counts of yarns. Following test methods were than undertaken to measure the various fibres characteristics and the yarn properties in the standard atmosphere: Temp 20º ± 2ºC and RH 65% ± 2%. Bundle Strength (Pressley Index) of fibres was determined by Pressley fibre bundle strength tester using zero gauge length. The flat bundle approx.1/4 inch width was held by a pair of clamps. All protruding ends were than sheared off even and tension applied to separate the clamps and thereby to break the fibres. The broken bundle was then weighed in a precision balance.

Achievement/Findings:

With some exception distinct differences were observed in various physical features between the fibres of the varieties Mesta HS-24 and Kenaf HC-2. The shape of the load-elongation (Strees-strain) curve obtained for forward path for the fibres of both varieties was same and the curves were straight almost up to the breaking point. The bundle strength, breaking tenacity and bursting energy of HC-2 fibre were distinctly higher than those of HS-24.In case of Kenaf HC-2 the bundle strength, breaking tenacity and bursting energy were 11.71 lbs/mg, 27.48 g-wt/tex and 4.67 gm. cm/tex respectively (Table 1) But the difference between the fibres of both varieties was less prominent in case of breaking elongation percentage. These figures for Kenaf (1.17 %) and Mesta (1.18%) were almost the same. The linear density in tex value for HS-24 was slightly greater than that for HC-2.The diameter in micron for Mesta was also slightly higher (42.9) than for Kenaf (41.7).These figures indicate that Kenaf is finer than Mesta (Table1) The average quality ratio percentages of yarns spun from Mesta and Kenaf fibres were 76.33 and 80.31 present respectively.
