The moisture regain of the fibres of different grades of white jute viz. BWC, BWD and BWE were studied throughout the years in 1989 and 1990.It was observed that the moisture regain of  the fibres varied appreciably with the change of season. The higher percentage of moisture regain was recorded in the month of June and the lower moisture regain in December.

To investigate the moisture regain capacity of jute fiber during the different seasons of the year

Three grades of jute fibre namely BWC, BWD and BWE available in the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) godown were collected for the experiment. The samples were exposed to open air for 48 hours. Then the moisture regain of the exposed jute was determined by Moisture Testing Oven, using the following formula. Where W1 is the original weight of exposed jute and W2 is the weight of oven dry weight of jute. Usually, a drying oven kept at 100ºC-150ºC with circulation of air, was used. For jute, however, a quick drying at temperature 120ºC was without any appreciable damage to the fibre. The moisture regain of the different samples thus obtained was the moisture of the jute fibre absorbed in the open air. The average of ten readings was considered as the moisture regain of the particular grade for a particular month.

It was found that the moisture regain of the jute varied appreciably with the change of the season. Higher percentage of moisture regain was recorded in the month of June and the lower moisture regain in December . Moreover it was observed that the moisture absorbed by the lower grade of jute fibre was higher than the higher grade of jute.The question of standard regain for jute is still undecided. The old value 13.75, percent is seldom followed. Some suggests that all the year round average rounded to 16 percent may be accepted as the standard. But since the humidity conditions vary so widely, this value does not seem to be in a better position than the value of regain (approximately 12 percent) corresponding to the standard condition.
