Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Individual effect of location and different parameters of genotypes (treatment) were also highly significant at 0.01 level. A large variation in grain yield for the tested genotypes was found in different locations and the tested entries were also varied within the location. The interaction effect of location and genotype for grain yield, growth duration, plant height (cm), panicles/m², filled grains/panicle, 1000-grain weight (g) and sterility% was highly significant at 0.01 level. The tested entry BR7358-5-3-2-1 produced the highest grain yield (7.77 t/ha) in Dinajpur followed by Hobigonj (7.60 t/ha) and it was lowest (5.61 t/ha) in Rangpur. The another tested entry BR7358-30-3-1 gave the highest grain yield (7.93 t/ha) in Rajshahi and the lowest (5.35 t/ha) in Rangpur. The tested entry BR7372-18-3-3 gave the lowest average yield (5.90 t/ha) among the tested entries and it was similar (6.00 t/ha) to that of the check variety BRRI dhan50. On an average, about 0.5 t/ha more yield was obtained by the tested entries BR7358-5-3-2-1 and BR7358-30-3-1 than the check variety BRRI dhan50. The growth duration of the tested entries were also varied due to the effect of locations and different genotypes. On an average, the highest yielder BR7358-5-3-2-1 matured in the shortest growth duration (144 days) followed by BR7358-30-3-1and BR7372-18-3-3 which matured in 148 and 149 days, respectively. The average growth duration of check variety BRRI dhan50 was 151 days. Mean plant heights of the tested entries were higher (86-97 cm) than the check variety. The check variety BRRI dhan50 gave the highest (314) panicle/m² which was followed by BR7358-30-3-1 (298), BR7358-5-3-2-1(271) and BR7372-18-3-3 (265). The highest yielder BR7358-5-3-2-1 produced the highest filled grains/panicle (137) followed by BR7358-30-3-1 (122) and the lowest 113 filled grains/panicle were produced by the check variety BRRI dhan50. Irrespective of the locations, the check variety BRRI dhan50 gave the lowest 1000-grain weight (19.67 g) followed by BR7358-30-3-1 (21.82 g) which was similar to that of the highest yielder BR7358-5-3-2-1 (21.86 g) and it indicates the fineness of the tested entries.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of advanced breeding lines of Boro at farmers’ field in different agro-ecological conditions.
To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) personnel.

Methodology:

Three advanced lines: BR7358-5-3-2-1, BR7358-30-3-1 and BR7372-18-3-3 along with BRRI dhan50 as check were tested during Boro, 2012. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 20 m² (4m x 5m). Seeding time was 04 December, 2011 and Seedling ages were varied from 40-45 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 100: 80: 60: 10: 3 kg N :P₂O₅: K₂O: S: Zn/ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied at the time of final land preparation as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT). Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample areas from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

On an average, the tested entry BR7358-5-3-2-1 gave the highest grain yield (6.58 t/ha) which was similar (6.53 t/ha) to that of BR7358-30-3-1. The tested entry BR7372-18-3-3 gave the lowest average yield (5.90 t/ha) among the tested entries and it was similar (6.00 t/ha) to that of the check variety BRRI dhan50. The highest yielder BR7358-5-3-2-1 matured in the shortest growth duration (144 days) followed by BR7358-30-3-1and BR7372-18-3-3 which matured in 148 and 149 days, respectively. The average growth duration of check variety BRRI dhan50 was 151 days. That means BR7358-5-3-2-1 and BR7358-30-3-1 were 3-7 days earlier with about half ton more yield than the check variety BRRI dhan50. Based on the growth duration, grain yield and farmers’ opinion, two advanced lines BR7358-5-3-2-1 and BR7358-30-3-1 may be considered for Proposed Variety Trial (PVT), if disease reaction of those lines is accepted by the pathologist.
