Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (alart), Micronutrient, Boro 2012

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Grain yield, growth duration, plant height, panicles m², grains panicle^-1, 1000-grain weight and sterility were significantly (p=0.01) affected by the interaction of location and genotype.Variation in grain yield of the tested genotypes was found in different locations due to location effect and the tested entries were also varied within the location. The individual effect of location and different parameters of genotypes (treatment) were also highly significant at 0.01 level. The tested entry BR7976-11-11-3-1 gave the highest yield (7.17 t/ha) in Hobigonj followed by Rajshahi (7.03 t/ha) and Mymensingh (6.70 t/ha) and it gave lowest yield (5.09 t/ha) in Barisal. Among the tested genotypes, BR7840-54-1-2-5 gave the highest grain yield (6.42 t/ha) followed by BR7840-54-3-1 (6.32 t/ha) and BR7840-54-2-5-1 (6.31 t/ha) and the lowest (6.13 t/ha) was in BR7976-11-11-3-1. The mean yield of all the tested genotypes was lower (6.13-6.42 t/ha) than that of the check variety BRRI dhan29 (7.04 t/ha) but it was higher or similar to that of the other check variety BRRI dhan28 (6.21 t/ha). Growth duration of the genotypes varied from 146 to 149 days whereas it was 144 days and 163 days for the check varieties BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29, respectively. The mean plant height was the highest (110 cm) in BR7840-54-1-2-5 and it ranged from 101 to 105 cm for the other three genotypes. Among the tested genotypes and check varieties, mean sterility% was the highest (50 %) in BR7976-11-11-3-1 followed by the check variety BRRI dhan29 (40 %). The highest sterility% in BR7976-11-11-3-1 might be due to the attack of neck blast in many places. BR7840-54-1-2-5 gave the highest 1000-grain weight (25.67 g) followed by BR7976-11-11-3-1 (23.65 g), BR7840-54-3-1 (23.5 g) and BR7840-54-2-5-1 (21.0 g).

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of micronutrients enriched advanced breeding lines at farmers’ field in different agro-ecological conditions.
To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.

Methodology:

Four micronutrients dense advanced lines BR7976-11-11-3-1, BR7840-54-3-1, BR7840-54-2-5-1 and BR7840-54-1-2-5 along with BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 as checks were tested during Boro, 2012. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 20 m² (4m x 5m). Seeding time was 07 December, 2012 and Seedling ages were varied from 40-45 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 100: 80: 60: 10: 3 kg N :P₂O₅: K₂O: S: Zn/ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied at the time of final land preparation as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT). Standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample areas from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

BR7840-54-1-2-5 gave the highest grain yield (6.42 t/ha) which was at par with BR7840-54-3-1 (6.32 t/ha) and BR7840-54-2-5-1 (6.31 t/ha) and the lowest yield (6.13 t/ha) was in BR7976-11-11-3-1. The mean yield of all the tested genotypes was lower (6.13-6.42 t/ha) than that of the check variety BRRI dhan29 (7.04 t/ha) but it was higher or similar to that of the other check variety BRRI dhan28 (6.21 t/ha). Growth duration of the tested genotypes fluctuated from 146 to 149 days whereas it was 144 days and 163 days for the check varieties BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29, respectively. Based on the growth duration, grain yield and farmers’ opinion, micronutrient dense BR7840-54-1-2-5 may be considered for Proposed Variety Trial (PVT).
