Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, on the studies of the quality of jute and waste cotton blended economic yarn, at jute and textile product Development center,Bangladesh Jute Research Institute ( BJRI ). Dhaka. An assessment of the quality of coarse count economic yarn produced by blending chemically modified jute and waste cotton (flat strip roving waste) in textile cotton ring spinning system was made. It was assessed in terms of the major use of such yarn, irregularity and count strength relationship and the results were compared with those of other coarse count yarn available in the local market. The yarn produced from the blend of chemically modified jute and waste cotton (flat strip, roving waste) in an optimum ratio of jute: cotton (50: 50) was found to be as good as those of coarse count 100% cotton yarn available in the local market and more economic than other coarse count yarns produced from 100% cotton.

Objectives:

To study on the quality of jute and waste cotton blended economic yarn

Methodology:

Tossa 0-9897 raw jute fibers were collected from the local market and cut into staple of 30 mm length. The staple jute were then modified by chemical and physical means to make them suitable for blending with waste cotton fiber. Chemical treatment of staple jute fiber was done through different steps such as alkali, bleaching and softening treatment. In order to establish economic viability, appropriate dose of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide and softener were optimized at required pH level, temperature and time. A selective bleaching method was adopted for de colorizing of jute fiber. Proper bleaching was ensured by appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide and by proper maintaining of temperature and time. The fiber was neutralized after bleaching treatment. For proper mechanical processing, selected softener was applied for softening the chemically modified jute fiber. A suitable ratio of jute: cotton (50:50) was developed for blending chemically modified jute and waster cotton to produce the coarse count blended yarn. This production process was carried out in textile ring spinning system. The chemically modified jute fibers were mixed up with waste cotton fibers in specific ratio of jute: cotton. Average staple length of these two fibers was 32mm. after blending the fibers, lap was made by passing the blended fibers through blow room machine. The lap was passes through the carding machine to crease the fibers in wave form. These wave form were converted to sliver-coiling inside the sliver can. Eight of such slivers obtained from carding, were drawn to a single sliver by passing them through rollers and having slow draft. The uranium density of the slivers and regularity of the blended fibers were examined and the slivers were drawn to roves in the simplex-roving machine. The roves wounds on the bobbins were drafted to yarn by the ring-spinning machine.

Achievement/Findings:

The chemically treated jute fibers used in the experiments were softer and tenderer than the raw jute fiber, but harder than cotton fiber. The modified jute fibers were spun on the ring spinning frame to produce yarn up to 26^s count. It has been observed that the blending of waste cotton with chemically modified jute fiber in equal portion reduces the irregularity of the yarn and significantly improves their qualities as measured by CSP value of 1760 for 10^s count yarn. The results were comparable with the corresponding value 2110 to the 100% cotton 10^s count yarn. Although the imperfection/100m i.e. thick, thin places and neps are more in blended yarn than 100% cotton yarn, it was also found that 10^s count blended yarn appeared to be as near as that of 100% cotton 10^scount yarn.
