Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An assessment on the quality of the value added blended fabrics had been made in terms of their physical properties. The results were compared with those of the products of 100% cotton fabrics. The properties of (blended /decorative) fabric, warp 20/2^s cotton and weft 10^s (jute 40% and cotton 60 %) were found as good as 100% cotton (warp 20/2^s and weft 20/2^s) fabrics. The experiment was conducted in the experimental processing mill of JTPDC, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 2002-2003. The blended fabrics may be used for further diversification of jute based textile product. It will wider a new horizon for jute.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Blended yarn of 10^S were collected from the spinning department of JTPDC, the experiment was conducted in the experimental processing mill of JTPDC BJRI in 2002-03 and 100% cotton yarn of 20/2^S were collected from a local market. Different types of blended fabric of 10S, 20S and 100% cotton fabrics were made with plain weave, using conventional loom with 120 RPM. In case of blended fabric the Wrp yarn were 100% cotton of 20/2^S and weft yarn were 10^Sand 20^S respectively. In case of 100% cotton fabric, both warp and weft yarns were 20/2^S. It was then finally heat setting machine. The blended fabric was thus made and was used for curtain, sofa-cover, school bag, travel bag, etc. the performance characteristics such as weight/m2, ends and pick per inch, strength, bending length, and bursting strengths were measured in standard condition of temperature and humidity.

Achievement/Findings:

Chemically treated blended fabric is softener than the untreated fabric but harder that the 100% cotton fabrics. The results revealed that the blended fabrics made from 10^S yarn is better than the blended fabrics of 20^S blended yarn and the fabric of 100% cotton yarn. The results revealed that newly developed fabric contained weight of 204.42g/m² and previously developed one has got 185.22 g/m² which showed that newly developed fabric is heavier than previous one and harder to the weight of 100% cotton fabrics. In case of filling yarn, the count of newly developed yarn is almost double than that of the previously developed yarn. Breaking strength of both the fabrics in warp way are almost same. The breaking strengths of newly developed fabrics in weft ways are higher than the previously developed blended fabric and almost same as cotton fabric and also is higher than the filling 20^S blended products. Bursting strengths of newly developed fabrics is higher than 100% cotton fabric. So the newly developed 10^S blended fabric is stronger than previously developed 20^s blended fabric. It can be concluded that the newly developed fabric by using 10^s blended fabric may be used as value added product.
