Effect of Reinforcement on Hydrophobic Property of Handmade Jute Paper

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To produce hydrophobic handmade paper, handmade paper were produced from jute fiber was reinforced by jute fiber along with/without internal additive (rosin, wax etc) external additive (MCC suspension). it was found that reinforcement of paper by jute without any additive decreased (upto 18.42%) the hydrophobic chapter of paper. the water resistance property increased when additive like rosin, MCC and wax were applied separately/ jointly along with reinforcement and optimum result was obtained when paper was reinforced by jute fiber along with rosin as internal additive during pulp preparation and MCC in the form of suspension as external additive. the experiments were done at the handmade paper laboratory of Mennonite Central Committee, Dhaka in the year of 2001-2002.

Objectives:

1.To prepare handmade jute paper.

2. To study the effect of reinforcement on hydrophobic property of handmade jute paper

Methodology:

BWB jute were collected from Mechanical Processing Division of BJRI and Mennonite central Committee( MCC) provided chemical and laboratory facilities. Seven different types of experiments were performed in the MCC laboratories. the fiber were cleaned and cut to the size of 1.27- 2.54cm. The fiber s were boiled to remove impurities in mild alkali for 4 hours. Thereafter, jute fibers were beaten in a beater for 17.25 hours to convert the fiber into pulp. Then the washed pulp were sized to increased the strength and hydrophobic property. The internal sizing material such as Rosin, Alum were prepared and the hand made paper were produced in the laboratory. Different types of physical properties such as thickness, GSM, Cobb water absorptivity, folding endurance were measured for each experimental group in the standard temperature and humidity for paper as per TAPPI standard test methods after conditioning for 3 days .

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that the mean thickness and GSM of paper were 0.33 mm and 188.86 respectively. The mean thickness of paper varied a lot as the CV% of paper thickness were 11,16-22.38% and CV% was 13.41%. The mean GSM of paper also varied as the CV% were 6.27%-16.97% and that among experiment was 7.88%. the variation in thickness and GSM was due to lack of uniformity in lifting. it was found that hydrophobic character of paper is decreased by 3.53% when paper is reinforced only by jute fiber and this value reached up to 18.42% when MCC was applied along with reinforcement. There was a little increase in water resistance when wax was applied along with reinforcement. the application of rosin along with reinforcement played a significant role in imparting water resistance to the paper. the water resistance was increased by 87.56% due to using rosin as internal sizing material along with reinforcement and it was decreased to 51.26% due to introducing wax as internal additive as well. The optimum result in respect to water resistance was obtained when paper was reinforced by jute fiber along with rosin as internal sizing and MCC suspension as external additive.
