Studies on the Construction of Polythene Substitute Fabrics Produced in Handlooms from Jute and Jute Cotton Blended Yarn.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute industries are facing serious challenges and competition from other industries which are manufacturing packaging material from synthetic fiber. Due to the substitutes the consumption of jute in the production of traditional packaging and carpet backing material is declining day by day. In the wake of this declining trend, the jute has now begun to diversify its product range to sustain operations. However, these efforts can not totally stop the downward trend for jute. Industrial and development research shows that jute fiber blended with waste cotton to from blending yarn, has a good prospect. In the last few years JTPDC under Bangladesh Jute Research Institute ( BJRI ). has done considerable amount of development works and now established the fact that spinning of 10^s, 16^s, 20^s single count yarn on rotor spinning machine and ring spinning machine are commercially viable. Polythene substitute diversified jutton fabrics is special type of low cost fabrics made by using different count of jute and jute cotton blended yarn on hand looms. These yarns can be used to make low cost shopping bags, garbage bag etc recent banning of polythene shopping bag has opened up a new horizon for the diversification of jute bag enhancing internal consumption.

Objectives:

To established the fact that spinning of 10^s, 16^s, 20^s single count yarn on rotor spinning machine

Methodology:

Tossa jute varieties of long jute fibers were collected from local market and cut into 30mm staple length by cutting machine. The staple fibers were then modified by chemical treatment to make for blending with waste cotton fiber. The waste fibers were collected from local cotton mill. Modified jute fibers and waste cotton fiber were mixed with different ratio and passed through blow room to form lap. The lap was passed through the carding machine and then through drawing machine to form uniform sliver. The slivers were processed into roves using simplex roving machine. The roves were spun into yarn through ring spinning machine having 110 spindles in the experimental processing mills of JTPDC. The insertion twists of the drafted yarn were 670tpm. The selected counts of the single yarn were 10^s, 16^s and 20^s. 100% jute yarn 345 text having 236 tpm was procured from BJMC. Polythene was constructed by 100% jute, jute waste and cotton waste blended yarn on looms. Total fabrics width 120 cm within this width 100% jute single thread 345 tex were used after 4 cm an interval. Weaving process on handloom was carried through different stages. After warp yarn sizing, fabric design developed and fabric were produced in the handlooms. Three constructed plain weave polythene substitute fabric samples were taken for tensile strength, GSM, read/pick and shrinkage were tested in standard room temperature and humidity conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

From the tested results it was revealed that depending on the market requirement polythene substitute fabric can be used for making shopping bag, especially for light weight carrying luxurious goods. Both warp and weft yarns of althea fabrics are blended with different ratio of jute and cotton. All the fabrics had common 120 cm width which are standard and ideal for making the requires end products. These fabrics are totally different from the traditional jute and cotton fabrics.
