Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trail was conducted on screening sugarcane genotypes against red rot disease (Colletotrichum falcatum Went) at two locations viz. Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi and Regional Sugarcane Research Station (RSRS) farm, Thakurgaon during the cropping season 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. Thirty four sugarcane genotypes were inoculated by the mixed inocula of 15 different isolates of Colletotrichum falcatum following hypodermic syringe method. Among them, only one (I 215-07) was found as resistant, thirteen were moderately resistant, twelve were moderately susceptible, seven were susceptible and only one (Isd 18) was found as highly susceptible to red rot.

Objectives:

i) To identify and select sugarcane genotypes having higher level of resistance against red rot disease.

ii) Recommendation of new resistant varieties /tolerant clones for final release to the growers.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at two locations viz. BSRI farm, Ishurdi and RSRS farm, Thakurgaon during the cropping season 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 with 34 sugarcane genotypes comprising commercial varieties, clones under zonal yield trial (ZYT) III, II,I and advanced yield trial (AYT). The collected 15 isolates of C. falcatum were cultured on oat meal agar (OMA) medium for 10-12 days to sporulate and mixed inoculum was prepared from the fresh culture. Inoculation was done at the stage of 8 months of plant. Fifteen canes of clone were inoculated in the middle of the third internode above the ground level following hypodermic syringe method where puncture was done by special made needle(2 cm long and 2 mm dia.). The punctured point was covered and wrapped by insulating tape in order to keep away from oxidation and contamination. The inoculated canes were examined by splitting longitudinally after two months of inoculation and graded according to symptomatic method.
