Screening of Sugarcane Genotypes Under Zyt-iii, Ii, I and Ayt to Smut Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trail was conducted on screening sugarcane genotypes against smut (Ustilago scitaminea) disease following spore suspension method at Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi during the cropping season 2010-2011. Forty six sugarcane genotypes comprising commercial varieties and the clones under ZYT III, II, I and AYT were tested against smut (Ustilago scitaminea) disease. The variety Isd 39 was taken as resistant (R) standard. Under ZYT-III, among 6 clones 2 clones were found as resistant (R), one clone was moderately resistant (MR), one was moderately susceptible (MS), one was susceptible (S) and the rest one was highly susceptible (HS). Under ZYT-II, there were 6 clones. Among them 3 clones were found as resistant (R), one clone was moderately resistant (MR), and the rest two were moderately susceptible (MS). Under ZYT-I, among 8 clones only one clone was found as resistant (R), one moderately resistant (MR), 3 were susceptible and remaining 3 were found as highly susceptible against smut disease. Under AYT among 25 clones 11 clones were found resistant, 3 clones were moderately resistant and rest were found moderately susceptible to susceptible to smut disease.

Objectives:

i) To identify and select sugarcane germplasms having superior resistance to smut disease.

ii) Recommendation of new resistant /tolerant clones/ varieties for commercial cultivation.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi and Regional Sugarcane Research Station (RSRS) farm, Thakurgaon BSRI farm, Ishurdi during the cropping season 2010-2011 with 46 sugarcane genotypes comprising commercial varieties, clones under zonal yield trial (ZYT) III, II, I and advanced yield trial (AYT). Inoculation was done by dipping setts in smut spore suspension (spore conc. 10⁶/ml) for 30 minutes before planting. Data on disease incidence will be recorded at an interval of one month up to harvest. Finally, on the basis of disease index the test clones will be categorized as Resistant, Moderately Resistant, Moderately Susceptible, Susceptible and Highly Susceptible. Only the Resistant and Moderately Resistant varieties/clones will be recommended for final release as variety.

Achievement/Findings:

No consistent and significant difference was found in any treatment among the tested four sugarcane varieties. The highest cane yield was found in all treatment of variety Isd 32 and only in control treatment of variety Isd 37.
