Varietal Screening Against Pineapple Disease of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BSRI farm, Ishurdi and RSRS farm, Gazipur during the cropping season 2010-2011.Total 20 genotypes of sugarcane under ZYT-III, II and I were tested to assess their performance against pineapple disease. The tested genotypes were inoculated by spraying the pathogen of Ceratocystis paradoxa over the setts after placement in the furrows. Control plots were maintained for each genotype. Germination of sugarcane setts was recorded after 60 days of planting. The genotypes were assessed considering their germination loss in the inoculated plots compared to healthy ones. Under ZYT-III, out of 6 clones no resistant or moderately resistant clones were found. All were found as susceptible. Under ZYT-II, out of 6 clones no resistant or moderately resistant clones were found. All were found as susceptible. Under ZYT-I, out of 8 clones, none was found as resistant or moderately resistant. All the clones showed susceptible reaction to pineapple disease.

Objectives:

i). To identify and select sugarcane germplasms having superior resistance to pineapple disease.

ii). Recommendation of resistant /tolerant varieties/ cultivars for commercial cultivation.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at BSRI farm, Ishurdi and RSRS farm, Gazipur during the cropping season 2010-2011. Twenty sugarcane genotypes comprising commercial varieties, clones under zonal yield trial (ZYT) III, II and I were tested.The tested genotypes were inoculated by spraying the pathogen of Ceratocystis paradoxa over the setts after placement in the furrows. Control plots were maintained for each genotype. Sett to sett and row to row spacing were ¹/₃ m and 1 m respectively. Data on disease incidence were recorded at an interval of one month up to harvest. Non germinated setts were examined to observe the presence of C. paradoxa.Germination of sugarcane setts was recorded after 60 days of planting. On the basis of disease index the test clones were categorized as Resistant, Moderately Resistant, Moderately Susceptible, Susceptible and Highly Susceptible. Only the Resistant and Moderately Resistant varieties/clones will be recommended for final release as variety. Number of mill able cane production and yield of cane were recorded at harvest. Clones with higher germination and higher yield were treated as resistant/tolerant against pineapple disease.
