Piloting of Disease Resistant High Sugar Content Varieties of Sugarcane Having Gur and Chewing Qualities in Chittagong Hill Tracts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three sugarcane varieties including one high sugar content (VMC 86-550) and two (China and Vietnam) having good chewing qualities but susceptible nature against disease were exposed in Chittagong Hill Tracts to observe their performance in the red soil and hilly areas. Growth conditions of all the varieties were excellent and no major diseases (red rot, wilt, smut etc.) were observed in any locations. In case of chewing variety China, the highest yield was found at Banderban by 150.67 t/ha and the lowest yield was at Khagrachari by 111.33 t/ha. In case of another chewing variety Vietnam, the highest yield was found also at Banderban by 130.67 t/ha and the lowest was at Rangamati by 102.50 t/ha. Regarding the high sugar content variety VMC 86-550, the highest yield of cane was found at Rangamati by 140.00 t/ha and the Brix percent was 18.0. On the other hand the lowest yield was at Banderban by 137.00 t/ha with 17.75 percent Brix. In all the locations, considering chewing quality, both the varieties are excellent. The variety VMC 86-550 is a high sugar content and self detrasing in nature which becomes popular for goor production in the hilly area.

Objectives:

i) To observe the the disease reaction of high sugar content susceptible varieties in Chittagong Hill Tract.

ii) To find out the sustainability of high sugar content varieties in this region

iii) To recommend the high sugar content and chewing varieties for the farmers of these regions.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in Chittagong Hill Tracts during the cropping season 2008-2009. Three sugarcane varieties (Isd 17, Isd 18 and Isd 28), including one high sugar content (VMC 86-550), two (China and Vietnam) having good chewing qualities and three local chewing varieties ( Chitra, Kafrang and CO 208) were taken for observation. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications and plot size was 8m x 6m. Growth and disease incidence of these genotypes/varieties were observed throughout the cropping season in the red soil and hilly areas.
