Effects of Heat Therapy of Sugarcane Seed Materials on Disease Incidence, Growth and Yield of Cane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To find out the effects of heat therapy on disease incidence, growth and yield of cane, an experiment was conducted with three sugarcane varieties viz; Isd 32, Isd 37 and Isd 38 at BSRI farm, Ishurdi. Apparently healthy seed materials of the said sugarcane varieties were treated in hot water at 50⁰C for 3 hrs. and at 52⁰C for 30 min. Control (without treatment) was maintained for each variety. No disease was found in any treated or untreated plots. This was perhaps due to use of apparently healthy seed materials. Regarding mill able cane, height, girth and yield of cane, no significant difference was found among the treatments in all 3 tested varieties.This is also may be due to using apparently healthy seeds.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of heat therapy on growth, yield of cane and sugar

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted with three sugarcane varieties viz; Isd 32, Isd 37 and Isd 38 at Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi during the cropping season 2008-2009. Apparently healthy seed materials of the said sugarcane varieties were treated in hot water at 50⁰C for 3 hrs. and at 52⁰C for 30 min. Control (without treatment) was maintained for each variety. After treatment, the seeds were placed in seed bed for germination. After 45 days of treatment, settlings were planted in the main field on last week of January following RCB design with 3 replications. Disease incidence was recorded throughout the season. Number of millable cane, height, girth and yield of cane were recorded at harvest (at the age of 12 months of cane).

Achievement/Findings:
