Collection and Conservation of Indigenous Vegetable Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Collection for rare indigenous vegetable germplasm from those regions. Survey was conducted by interviewing selected farmers. Interviewing was completed following a questionnaire prescribed by Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), BARI. Later on, germplasm expedition teams with their full preparation went at all six aforesaid districts. They made survey regarding indigenous vegetable germplasm in various upazillas of all six districts by interviewing enthusiastic farmers in respect of cultivation practices of vegetable growing. The teams finally succeeded to collect rare indigenous vegetable germplasm from several upazillas of all the six districts mentioned above. Of All the collected materials most of them were orthodox seeds. Some of the collected materials were under live plants. Some of the collected materials as seeds were regenerated in micro plots of PGRC, BARI. Afterwards, regenerated seeds were conserved in conservation unit of PGRC, BARI for future research activity. In the conservation unit all the collected seed materials have been conserved in medium term cool room for future reference.

To collect indigenous vegetable germplasm in Rajshahi division and CHT, To document the indigenous knowledge of the IVS utilization and cultivation and To establish community genebank among end users and providing training to them

Methodology:

Prior to make survey and collection programs three training programs were conducted for both officers and farmers under Rangamati, Bandarban and Chapainawabganj districts. Later on, germplasm collection expedition teams went to various selected upazilas of each of the above mentioned districts. Each germplasm expedition team made survey program during germplasm collection period. At last many rare indigenous vegetable germplasm were collected from vegetable growing farmers.
