Citrus Diversity Related Household Characteristics at Jaintapur Upazila of Sylhet District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was focused on the composition and structure of homegarden, diversity of citrus species, types and source of citrus planting materials and villagers’ attitudes towards homestead citrus plantation in the homestead area. Sixty local people from six Unions were interviewed for this purpose. It also explored the relationships between the selected characteristics (independent variables) namely age, education, family size, homestead land size, farm size, number of trees in homestead, problem confrontation during citrus cultivation, total annual income, annual income from citrus, training participation and number of citrus species in homestead (dependent variable). Correlation analysis indicates that four selected characteristics of the farmers namely homestead land size, number of trees in homestead, total annual income and annual income from citrus showed significant positive relationships with the diversity of citrus species, while no such significant relationship was observed with age, education, family size, farm size and problem confrontation of the farmers. Training participation of the farmers had negative relationship with the diversity of citrus species but not significant. Mainly seedlings are used as planting materials and majority of the people collect these seedling from market. Average 50% area of the household are occupied with trees among them 38% was fruit tree other than citrus followed by citrus 29% and timber species 22% in the study area. People cultivate citrus in their homestead by realizing that economic returns from citrus is possible and citrus can meet their family need successfully.

Objectives:

To investigate the present condition of different tree, homestead utilization pattern and relationship of some selected characteristics of the households with the citrus species diversity in the study area.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in six Unions of Jaintapur Upazila in Sylhet District. Fieldwork took place between July to November 2013. It is located 40 kilometres North of Sylhet District town and at the foot of the Jaintia Hills. The study area was located between 24°59´ and 25°11´ North latitudes and in between 92°03´ and 92°14´ East longitudes. The total area of Jaintapur Upazila is 280.27 sq. km. The land type of this area is divided into five type’s e.g. high land, medium high land, medium low, low land and very low land. The practice of the citrus cultivation is occupied in high land, medium high land and medium land (BBS, 2011). The soil of the study site was grey, sandy loam in texture and belong to the “none calcareous Grey” soils under Eastern Surma-Kusiyara Flood Plain. Organic matter content of soils is moderate. The reaction of soils ranges from strongly acidic to neutral (4.7-6.9) (FAO, 1988). The climate of Jaintapur is humid subtropical with a predominantly hot and humid summer and a relatively cool winter. It is generally marked with the monsoon climatic zone, with annual average highest temperature is 23 °C (August–October) and average lowest temperature is 7 °C (January). Nearly 80% of the annual average rainfall is 3334 mm occurs between May and September (Wikipedia, 2013).
