There is a potential danger that undesirable amount of As could be accumulated in the rice grain, the staple food grain in Bangladesh, due to irrigation of rice field with As contaminated water. However, the extent of contamination level varies from area to area. Unfortunately, little is known about the impact of As contaminated irrigated water on rice yield and grain quality and ultimately on the health of the millions of the rice consumers in Bangladesh. The database information regarding soil As status, As content at different depths of ground water and its mitigation ways are lacking. So, a survey and field study carried out to find out the level of As in different depth of As contaminated groundwater level and analyzes of rice plant (root, straw and grain). Information on arsenic contamination in soil, plant and water are very limited in Bangladesh. No systematic research work has yet been done on the assessment of arsenic contamination in the soil-water-plant system and its impact on crop production in the country. With a view to generate information on Arsenic status in soils and irrigation water of different locations of Bangladesh, the coordinated project on Arsenic in Soil-Water- Plant System was formulated. The information might be useful and can play a great role to minimize hazardous effect of this toxic element on crop productions, crop quality and human health of the country. To achieve the goal of the project Soil Resource Development Institute has collected 240 soil , 240 water samples as well as 300 rice grain samples from Chandina, Kochua and Veramara. Rice samples have been collected in both Boro and Aman season. The samples of soil, water and grain have been analyzed by ICP flowing world wide standard method. The findings of the study showed that most of the soils of project area contain less than 20 ppm arsenic. The highest concentration of arsenic (25.96 ppm) has been found in Boro Koraia union of Kochua Upazila under Chandpur District. The water samples from different locations of the study area contain 0 to25.96 pmm arsenic. Findings of the studyalso showed  that irrigation water of STW contains more arsenic than irrigation water of DTW. The concentration of arsenic in rice grain of the study area varies from 0 to 1.77 pmm. It is to  be mention that local varieties of rice absorb more arsenic than HYV rice

  Contamination of soil

1.To asses the Arsenic status in different source of irrigation water.

2.To asses the Arsenic status in paddy soils.

3.To asses the Arsenic content in rice grain.

4.To develop database on as contamination in soils and water of study area.

5.To prepare Map on Arsenic status of Chandina, Kochua and Veramara Upazila

At the beginning of the project, the research team and project staffs finalized sample selection site of 3 upazillas likeVeramara of Khustia, Kachua of Chandpur & Chandina of Comilla. The research team and project staffs have selected study sites (Villages) on the basis of benchmark survey findings and GIS. B.Benchmark survey: A benchmark survey in the project area (Veramara of Khustia, Kachua of Chandpur & Chandina of Comilla) has been conducted on water and soil quality in respect of As contamination through analysis of water of tube wells and soil samples. Arsenocosis patients will also be identified in the project areas. Both year of installation and depth of tube wells have been considered during the selection of the tube wells. Rice grain samples have been collected from the command area of the study tube wells. The upazila wise soil arsenic maps have been prepared with benchmark survey data and it will be included with the benchmark survey report. C. Water, Soil and plant samples collection and analysis at the beginning of the project, 10 irrigation sources like STW and DTW of each union have been selected for water sample collection. Soil and rice grain (Boro & T. Aman) samples were collected from the same spot. The samples of soil, water and grain have been analyzed by ICP following world wide standard method.
