Yield of Wheat as Affected by Variety and Seed Rate

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out at the Agronomy farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2007 to March 2008 to study the effect of cultivar and seed rate on yield of wheat. Four wheat varieties Shatabdi, Kanchan, Sourav and Gourav and five seed rate viz.; (60, 80, 100, 120, 140 kg ha^-1) were considered as the experimental treatment. The design used in the experiment was RCBD with three replications. The experiment revealed that the variety and seed rate have significant effect on yield. Among four varieties Shatabdi possessed the highest plant height and highest number of total tillers plant^-1, effective tillers plant^-1, grain number spike^-1 and 1000 grain weight. On the other hand 100 kg ha^-1 seed rate sowing its superiority by producing highest 1000 grain weight (44.61g) as well as highest yield contributing characters. The result also indicated that, variety Shatabdi with 100 kg ha^-1 seed rate gave the highest grain (3.08 t ha^-1) and straw (5.28 t ha^-1) yield and Sourav with 60 kg ha seed^-1 rate gave the lowest grain (1.26 t ha^-1) and straw (2.58 t ha^-1) yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of different cultivars and seed rates on yield of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from 5 December 2007 to 30 March 2008. The experimental field is situated at the Southern part of the BAU Farm and it belongs to the Old Brahmaputra Flood plain (AEZ-9).The soil belongs to the Sonatala series of non-calcareous dark grey floodplain type. The soil texture of the experimental plot was silty loam with pH value of 6.8. Urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 200-160-50-120 kg/ha. The entire amount of TSP, MOP and gypsum and one third of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest two thirds of urea were top dressed in two equal splits at crown root initiation stage (24 days after sowing) and vegetative phase (54 days after sowing). The experiment was comprised with four varieties (viz. Shatabdi, Kanchan, Sourav and Gourav) and five seed rate (viz.S₁= 60,S₂= 80, S₃= 100,S₄= 120 and S₅= 140 ).The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The treatments were randomly assigned in each replication. The unit plot size was 4.0 m × 3.0m. Block to block and plot to plot distance were1.0m and 0.5m, respectively. Seeds were sown on 7 December 2007 in broadcasting method. Care was taken to avoid bird damage. Weeding was done at 30 days after sowing and 60 days after sowing by mechanical method. The crop received two irrigation. one at crown root initiation (CRI) stage on 25 December 2007 and the other at early booting stage on 3 February 2008. Ten hills were selected randomly from each plot from which different data were collected. The collected data were analyzed statistically by using the statistical package MSTAT and the mean values were adjudged as per DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The result indicated that variety Shatabdi with 100 kg ha^-1 seed rate performed batter than the other three varieties namely, Kanchan, Sourav and Gourav. The variety is characterized by the higher plant height, higher number of tillers plant^-1, higher number of grains spike^-1 and heavier seeds.
